Over the summer the Pants come to represent the support of the sisterhood, but they also lead each girl into bruising and ultimately healing confrontations with love and courage, dying and forgiveness. Lena finds her identity in Greece and the courage not to reject love; Bridget gets in over her head with an older camp coach; Carmen finds her father ensconced with a new fiancée and family; and Tibby unwillingly takes on a filmmaking apprentice who is dying of leukemia. Each girl's story is distinct and engrossing, told in a brightly contemporary style. Like the Pants, the reader bounces back and forth among the four unfolding adventures, and the melange is spiced with letters and witty quotes. Ann Brashares has here created four captivating characters and seamlessly interwoven their stories for a young adult novel that is fresh and absorbing. In diesem Buch geht es um das Leben, um Erwachsenwerden und um die Freundschaft.
Für jeden, der nicht gern auf englisch liest, gibt es auch die deutsche Übersetzung. Aber Original bleibt Original.
The conceit here is that once upon a time these four friends discovered what appeared to be a pair of ordinary blue jeans in a thrift shop. They decide that all four of them should try on the jeans and whoever looks best in them get to keep the pants. However, despite their disparate body types the jeans look good on all four of them. Obviously these are magic pants, and thus is born the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants with its ten rules the summer before their junior year of high school when the quartet will be apart for the first time in their live. Basically each girl gets the pants for a week and is required to try and do something interesting while wearing them, and then write their friends about it. Lena and her sister will be visiting their grandparents on the Greek island of Santorini, Bridget is attending a soccer camp in Baja California, Carmen is spending the summer with her father in Charleston, and Tibby is staying home and working at Wallman's.
Actually in the novel the idea of the sisterhood is more important than the actual pants (the movie makes a lot more of the pants themselves). Once I tuned in to the symbolism of the Traveling Pants I started picking up on other symbols in the story, such as the brown bag in Tibby's freezer and what Kostos catches Lena doing, and how those things captured the essential conflict of each character. One of Brashares' strengths is this ability to crystalize her characters in this manner. Another is the way she plays up the introspective nature of each character. It is not that Lena, Tibby, Bridget and Carmen are role models, but rather that they face problems with which adolescents can readily identify. In those context being introspective, and having good friends with whom they can really talk, are the parts that young readers would want to emulate.
The other aspect of "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" that is laudable is how it teaches its lesson without beating readers over the head. Readers learn that getting what you want does not always make you happy, asking questions is important even if you do not get answers, waiting for the right moment to say something can only make it hard to say anything at all, and that life has a way of forcing you to put things in perspective. Having seen the movie first I was also struck by how the way Brashares pairs up the Sisterhood at the end, because it calls our attention to the complementing relationships that exists between the girls that establish the ways in which they are opposites. That also speaks to the way in which Brashares has crafted her characters so that they represent the spectrum of adolescent concerns and there is a reason why she does not consider her books to be fantasy. How successful she has been in this regard is evidenced by the popularity of these novels and how quickly the first one was turned into a movie.
