Vanessa Sands and her older sister, Justine, are very different, but very close. Justine is the daredevil and loves to be in the spotlight and the center of attention, while Vanessa is afraid of everything.

One night, after a family argument, Justine's fearless ways end in a tragic accident. Her body is found washed ashore after a cliff-diving accident near her family's vacation house in Maine. But Vanessa doesn't believe that her sister's death was just an accident and she sets out to prove it.

She soon learn that her sister was not who she thought she was and had been keeping secrets from almost everyone, except her boyfriend and childhood friend, Caleb (who is now missing).

Meanwhile, other bodies are now washing up on shore. Vanessa is sure that this is no coincidence and that there is some reason for all of these deaths. With Simon's (Caleb's brother's) help, they uncover the secret to what is happening in the town. And while she is finding that she has feelings for Simon, she is also discovering that her family has a secret of its own that she never dreamt of.

SIREN is a unique and interesting story. Right from the first chapter, I was hooked! I felt that the writing flowed so well and I flew through it.

I have only read a couple of books about mermaids, but I don't think any of them had been about Sirens. The story just enthralled me and there were a couple of twists, which I always love.

I really liked all of the characters. I thought that they all had depth to them and seemed real. I found myself rooting for the main characters, and even the secondary characters.

The only thing that I didn't like is that there seemed to be some loose ends at the end of the story, but I won't say what so that I don't spoil it. I'm not sure if this book is going to be part of a series or not, but I sure hope so!

I don't know how he heard me, but he was by my side in seconds.
"Vanessa? What-"
And then he froze, too.
A lifeless arm, attached to a lifless body, streched from the water toward the rocks. The body was facedown, but it was clear from the build that it was a man.
"Simon...," I breathed, my eyes filling with tears.
"It's not...?"

Tricia Rayburn's Schreibstil hatte mich von der ersten Seite an gefangen: Die Beschreibungen sind nüchtern und einfach gehalten, es wird nie zu viel gesagt und doch schafft sie es ohne Mühe alles Mögliche und Unmögliche vor den Augen ablaufen zu lassen. Dadurch entsteht eine individuelle Atmosphäre während man weiterliest, wie die Luft kurz vor einem Sturm. Man weiß etwas ist im Busch, doch bis zu den letzten Kapiteln weiß man nicht, was es ist, wo schließlich ein Gehimnis nach dem anderen gelüftet wird.

Was mir besonders an 'Siren' gefallen hat, sind die Charaktere. Jeder einzelne von ihnen hat dieses gewisse Etwas, das ihn oder sie auszeichnet und lebendig erscheinen lässt. Kein einziger ist auch nur ansatzweise ein Abklatsch von anderen YA Fantasy Persönlichkeiten, was die Geschichte nur noch lesenswerter für mich macht. Besonders bei Simon war ich dankbar, dass dem männlichen Protagonisten nicht die Bad-Boy Zwangsjacke aufgezwungen wurde, die nun wirklich nicht alle Autoren beherrschen. Umso erfrischender war die Abwechslung mit 'Science-Geek' die ihn aber keineswegs weniger einnehmend macht.
Eine andere Sache die mir aufgefallen ist, und die ich sehr mochte, ist, dass die Autorin nicht auf viele heiße Kussszenen (nicht, dass es sie nicht gab) und jede Menge Liebeserklärungen gesetzt hat, sondern es schafft ohne viele Worte starke Gefühle zu vermitteln.

Die Storyline war ebenfalls sehr gut durchdacht, bei keiner Szene hatte ich das Gefühl sie sei überflüssig oder hätte nicht sein müssen. Das Ende fand ich treffend gewählt, es ist weder übereilt noch bleiben Fragen offen, obwohl es leicht frustrierend ist, allerdings im positiven Sinn. Im Sommer 2011 erscheint das Sequel, 'Undercurrent' (Undercurrent: A Siren Novel), welches ich bereits kaum erwarten kann, doch bis dahin werde ich mich wohl durch das Wiederlesen von 'Siren' trösten müssen.

Alles in allem kann ich sagen, dass 'Siren' für mich DIE YA-Neuerscheinung 2010 war und ich kann es absolut jedem YA Fantasy Liebhaber empfehlen.

Siren is a crime/fantasy novel about Vanessa, a high school student, who's sister dies mysteriously and as the story continues, bodies and mysteries keep piling up. In her search for the truth she is joined by her sister's boyfriend and his brother, Simon, with whom both she's been friends since childhood. She also makes new friends along the way, who make things even more mysterious. There's also a romance evolving throughout the story, which is nicely done but is not in the centre of the story (thank god, because I can't take another teen fantasy novel evolving just around a pretty boy).

I thought the story was good, the mysteries intriguing. I wasn't as fond of the language as some other reviewers, but it was something different. The characters were sometimes poorly developed which made it hard to be convinced by the whole story on a few occasions. Generally, there were some flaws in the story. Even after finishing the book and its sequel I didn't quite grasp why her sister had to die or why those headaches only occured with one person. Also I didn't get why Vanessa was so unaware of her effect on people, but I'm going to stop here not to spoil things for future readers.

Still, I can really recommend this novel if you're looking for a good story with a touch of mystery and crime. Enjoy the read!
