I have a slowly growing collection of Beatles tribute albums. Many of them, this one included, were very likely recorded to cash in on the popularity of the Beatles, but ultimately what matters in whether one enjoys them or not. There was a time when I would have steered well clear of albums such as this one, but I have come to quite like the Chipmunks' music. This particular album has been re-issued more than once, but I first wanted to buy it during one of its periods out of print, but my patience was rewarded.
Recorded very early in the Beatles' career, this album necessarily focuses on their early material. Actually, that's probably why the album works so well. The simple rock'n'roll songs of the early Beatles (including Twist and shout, a song that the Beatles themselves covered) lend themselves ideally to the Chipmunks' style. All the arrangements appear to be faithful to the Beatles' own versions, there being no dramatic re-interpretations here. As recorded here, I guess my favorite would be P. S. I love you, That may be partly because I don't hear the song as often as I hear most of the other songs here, so it sounds fresher, but I enjoy every track here.
In one sense, this album is very predictable. If you are familiar with the Chipmunks and try to imagine them singing early Beatles songs, you won't be surprised by this album. Assuming you have imagined correctly, you'll get exactly what you expect. If the prospect appeals to you, buy it. If not, avoid it like the plague.
