It is safe to say that most parents are familiar with the daily ritual and associated challenges of getting their children to sleep. With an 8 year old boy in our household, I include myself in this demographic. This book makes an attempt to provide some tactics for the bedtime routine to make it less stressful and more efficient.

To faciliate getting your children to stop fussing and getting them to sleep, Mr. Bergmann lays out 30 habits, each devoted to a 1-2 page chapter. Advice includes "establish a routine", "be on the same page" as your spouse regarding the ritual and rules you have set, and "don't make empty threats". The advice is reasonable enough, and resonates with what seems to work in our family. As Mr. Bergmann recommends, we read to our son before bed and play soothing music. We try to stick to a regular lights-out time and create an environment in the house which promotes sleep. It isn't rocket science, and these methods work for us.

You won't find here any help for families of little ones who have trouble sleeping for causes other than just being a little wound up in the evening (while the parents are tired after the long day). Physical and mental conditions including chronic insomnia are not even mentioned. Nor is there any discussion on how much sleep is enough for children, and what their needs are at different ages.

Granted, the book promises "30 simple habits" and that is what is delivered. My recommendation is that interested readers review the table of contents which list out the habits. For experienced parents, this should be sufficient understand the content.
