4.0 von 5 Sternen A Simple Amish Christmas 3. Oktober 2010
Von Lollipops - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Annie Weaver left home during her rumspringa to live with an aunt. While there, she got her GED and her RN. She has a good job at a Children's hospital when she gets a call that her dad was in an accident. Annie drops everything and rushes home to care for her dad.

When she gets there, she discovers that Amish "doc" Samuel Yoder has questions about her ability to care for her dad. Annie doesn't want to admit that she has an RN and as much training as he does, but she doesn't want him to treat her like an irresponsible child either.

Samuel isn't prepared for Little Annie to be all grown up. His best friend is her father, and while Samuel is attracted to her, the age difference between them causes him to hesitate. But will it be too long, to lose her to a man closer to her own age? And will Annie find her place in the Amish world again?

A SIMPLE AMISH CHRISTMAS is the debut novel by Vannetta Chapman. It has a different approach to many of the Amish books I've read, but it is no less good. I really enjoyed getting to know Annie and Samuel and learning about the community they live in.

Annie is a realistic heroine, but I was a little surprised at how easily she gave up her job at the hospital. I was also a little confused because the prologue indicates she was sent away unwillingly, but later it says that she went away. There were also portions of the book that encouraged skimming. Still, this was an excellent debut novel and I would look for more by this author. I'm giving it 4 stars since I don't have the option of giving it 4.5. Discussion questions are included at the end of the book, making it ideal for discussion groups.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Sweet Christmas Tale 6. November 2010
Von Delia Latham - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Three years after leaving her family and the Amish community in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, Annie Weaver returns home to care for her father, who's been injured in a buggy accident.

During her time in the city, she became a licensed nurse. None of her Amish friends and family know of her new skills, but that doesn't stop her from using them to give her father the best care she's capable of providing. Contrary to the uncomplimentary opinion of Samuel Yoder, the insufferable Amish farmer who provides medical care to the community, she actually knows what she's doing.

Coming home fulfills something deep inside Annie. She's where she belongs, and has no plans to leave again. As she settles back into the lifestyle she was born to, she prays that God will find a way for her to use her medical training in the community. In the meantime, she waits expectantly for Christmas, eager to experience again the simple, Amish way of celebrating the holiday.

Samuel is not an old man, but the loss of his wife and baby eight years ago stole his youth and his passion for life. Annie Weaver's return to Mifflin County makes him feel again. It takes no time at all for him to recognize her obvious talent in the medical field, and not much longer to realize she's stolen his heart. But familial obligations and the difference in his and Annie's ages give him pause about acting on his feelings.

On the morning of the Simple Amish Christmas Annie has yearned for, they'll both make the most important decision of their lives. Will Annie be willing to use her training to help her people in a new and unexpected way? And will Samuel release the pain of his past to let a new love into his heart?

A Simple Amish Christmas is a sweet, heart-touching romance that provides all the warm, fuzzy feelings one expects in a Christmas story. It's well-written, with realistic, life-sized characters that make one hope this isn't the last Mifflin County novel. Many of the secondary characters are easily strong enough to carry their own story. The storyline flows well, and the unexpected touches of humor show a side of the Amish that many people don't expect. Great writing, great storytelling, great book!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Beautiful Amish romance 30. September 2010
Von T. M. Travis - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
DISCLOSURE: I was provided a copy of A Simple Amish Christmas by the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own.

I've become a big fan of Amish fiction, thanks to an online crit partner, and Vannetta Chapman's A Simple Amish Christmas is one of the better ones I've read. I got a feel for the gentle atmosphere of an Amish community in these pages. Chapman seems to have researched well.

Annie Weaver comes home after a three year rumschpringe, an accredited nurse, when her father has an accident. The beauty and simplicity of home convince her that she wants to stay, though she's not sure what to do with her training.

Samuel Yoder is a farmer and healer, a widower with baggage. The two don't see much reason to spend time together but circumstances dictate otherwise and a delightful story follows.

Five stars. You really need to read this debut novel this Christmas.

2.0 von 5 Sternen nice story, but not complete 13. Mai 2012
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoyed reading this book until the end. It was predictable with the romance, but that didn't bother me. The relationship went through some interesting turns before coming to the expected conclusion. However, the story ends too abruptly. The author introduces at least three subplots that are left completely up in the air when the story ends. There is no sequel that I can tell and I am wondering what kind of editor approves a storyline that stops before it is completed? The book is sweet and if you stay focused on Annie and Samuel and ignore all the other characters and subplots that are like staircases leading to nowhere, then you'll have a more satisfactory reading experience. I'm glad I got this book for free because I'd be upset if I'd bought it it.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Surprised that I got through to the end 17. Juli 2012

It's rare that I take the time to write reviews and even more rare that I write negative reviews, but this book unfortunately inspired me to take the time.

What could have been a sweet, fun book fell flat in almost every area. For the most part, characters were not well-developed. The story line was so predictable that it was transparent, and it plodded along. The dialogue was probably the strongest part of the book, but that's not saying much. And finally, we were left with several different completely unfinished story lines (**possible spoilers** What happened to the toy store?! What happened with the sick kid?! And on and on and on). I would have been more bothered about the hanging story lines if I had bought in to the book at all and cared about any of the characters. Thankfully, I did not.

It was a disappointing and often boring read (if I had to read one more time about how thankful the main character was for being back home, where she belonged, where everything was simple, blah blah blah...), and I'm glad that I did not pay for it.
The book seems to have an overwhelming amount of positive reviews, which surprises me a great deal.
