Putting Silent Hill into print has been suicidal thufar. We have seen a few novels pop up here and there and we have seen the things that were collected for the first Omnibus (there's a second one on its way, so please don't confuse the comments since it still has a month before its release). While these tried to be something from Silent Hill, they reminded me of the flaws that have hurt games like SH4: The Room in the past. There is something about them that really doesn't fit, a piece that tries too hard to be SH or something that does not belong, and that slope gets slippery quickly. That was one reason I was fearful of this book and why, at last, I felt good about one of the stories that had come out.
This had that feel to it - the one that you want.
I cannot say a lot about the book without messing with the plotline. What I will say is that the graphics are not childish like some have been in the past (sorry to any artists), and the story built an atmosphere you could feel. The SH tales are morality plays that nnormally end badly and, well, this is one of those. You see some of it coming but some of it is hidden and, well, I like the surprises. I do not like the feeling of being an all-knowing reader, perferring to ride shotgun with my characters instead. And this book does that, allowing the chips to fall in a beautiful manner.
Fans of SH - do not fear this one. Count the losses from before, like what you read, and think "finally, SH in print." It isn't a kid's book, isn't a toy - it is fun in its suffering.
I recommend it as a diversion worth soaking in.
