5.0 von 5 Sternen not only for kids 28. März 2013
This book is meant as a tool for developing story telling with kids - but I find it an excellent tool for everybody who loves story telling and writing. I am a writer, and I am always looking for inspiration. And this book is full of playful ideas! Just looking through it sparks new stories.
WriterŽs block - no more, ever, if you have this book!

Some lovely creative ideas.
Beautifully written book.
However the preparation time for a lot of the activities are very long. So not very suitable for when you just have an hour or so to do a creative project.

5.0 von 5 Sternen bring story writing/telling/playing alive! 25. September 2012
Von Amy Bowers - Veröffentlicht auf
Neuberger's book shares 40 ideas, crafts, and games aimed at helping kids invent and play with story telling. Her entire philosophy spoke to my sensibility with her support of open-ended creative play and an emphasis on ample space with simple items to spark imagination.

She offers projects like story disks, dice, grab bags, blocks and stones that get creative juices flowing to start inventing new worlds and adventures.

After a story (or three) is created, she provides projects that let kids "play" with what they wrote. From puppet theaters and stage set pieces to maps and story jars - her ideas are impressive and inspirational. As I read through, I marked many pages of projects I wanted to do with my kids and other home school kids in my circle.

One of the best things about Show Me a Story is the wide age range the activities accommodate. Most of the projects have an appeal from preschoolers to middle schoolers with slight variations and adjustments. I have already marked several writing games to play with the young writers' workshop I host.

I highly recommend this book for any home schooler, crafty parent or teacher. In fact, this would be a fabulous gift for your child's teacher, scout leader or Sunday school teacher.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Golden Resource 25. August 2012
Von Dana - Veröffentlicht auf
As an early childhood educator and parent, I can't say enough about Emily Neuburger's new book. "Show me a Story" is an excellent resource for anyone who works with young children or is a parent. Her ideas are whimsical, playful and creative. Most importantly, for busy adults, they are also easy to follow and implement. The book itself is a piece of art. My 8 year-old daughter loved leafing through the pages with me and eagerly asked, "can we try that?!" What's more, Emily's ideas are fresh-- I had never heard of a story stone before and if you haven't either, I suggest you buy this book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great ideas for helping nurture creativity 27. August 2012
Von Shala Kerrigan - Veröffentlicht auf
Show Me a Story: 40 Craft Projects and Activities to Spark Children's Storytelling by Emily K. Neuburger is a guide to creative exercises you can do with a child to make up stories.

Children love to make up stories with their toys, friends and in play. This book helps make a regular and thoughtful pattern of it. While it's meant for adults to do with children, a lot of the activities will work with children of all ages.

The craft projects include cards, decorated rocks to work as figures, small paper puppets and creating small scenes. One of my favorite things in the book is the number of projects that are portable so you can make up stories on long car trips or any place else you might have to sit quietly.

My favorite projects are very interactive, and use storytelling prompts like decorated dice. It turns storytelling into a fun game and conversation starter. Also the part about exploring with a camera and a notebook to collect things to turn into a story is a very good one.

The author also talks about the basic structure of a good story, having a beginning, middle and end, and ways to help develop that part of a story.

They are easy projects, they don't require that you have to be an artist to do them. The author has taught creative writing and used some of these techniques with high school students. While it's aimed for children, the writing prompts and exercises will also work with adults, and can be used as a great problem solving tool or communication tool.

My family has been putting some of these ideas into practice and it is a lot of fun for the whole family. The book is well-written with clear language and ideas. It's one that I don't just recommend to parents and people who take care of small children, because a lot of the exercises will work well with tweens and young adults. I also think (hope!) the tips in here will make me a better blogger.
[I received a complimentary copy of the book to review on my craft blog- Don't Eat the Paste. My reviews are always my honest opinion]

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fabulous book! 4. September 2012
Von T. Towers - Veröffentlicht auf
You and your children/students will equally fall in love with this book! I have two daughters, ages 7 and 9, that have already created some of the projects in the book with little help needed from me. The pictures are colorful and captivating, drawing the child in and making her/him truly want to create. My favorite part is that my girls really are able to collect most of the supplies they need, right from our backyard and kitchen recycling bin. All of those stones, sticks, glass jars and old clothing catalogs finally are being put to good use!
One of my girls struggles with creative writing and we have already used some of the art she has made with the book's guidance, as a tool to help her sequence her story, as well as add more description. She is also a tactile learner, so being able to feel, hold, arrange and stare at a representation of the objects she is trying to describe in her writing, has been an enormous help. For the first time, she is actually enjoying writing in her at-home journal! Whether you are a parent, teacher, in-home tutor or anyone working with children, this book will be an invaluable resource to you.
