Kurzbeschreibung

BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE

For Jessie Shimmer, everything changed when she went to hell and back to save her lover, Cooper Marron. After tangling with supernatural forces and killing an untouchable spirit lord, Jessie finds herself gifted—or perhaps cursed—with dark powers. And when she and Cooper make love, her pleasure throes light the whole house on fire. What is a sorceress to do?

Jessie is about to find out. The circumstances of her birth, the mystery of a father she never knew, and the help of a cuddly ferret turned fearsome monster have made Jessie not just an outlaw from mundane society, but an accidental revolutionary in the magic realm. Encountering portals stitched into thin air and a fiercely sexy soul harvester, Jessie rushes headlong among enemies, horrors, wonders, and lovers into a place of self-discovery—or destruction.

A terrific followup to Spellbent 26. Oktober 2010
Von Noira Janssen - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
I really loved Spellbent, the first book in Snyder's series, so when I saw Shotgun Sorceress for sale in the dealer's room at the convention I traveled to this weekend (OVFF) I bought it. My bf wanted to drive on our trip back home, so I thought, 'Oh I'll read a few pages' but I ended up reading the whole thing.

This is a totally entertaining read! I think you can read it and enjoy it if you haven't read Spellbent, but IMO you'll get more out of this if you did read the first book.

Shotgun Sorceress is broken into two parts - the first part of the book is Jessie and Cooper sort of under house arrest in Columbus. Jessie gets into trouble because she can't completely control her fiery hand or her emotions. We learn more about her familier Pal, and about Jessie's past. And Jessie and Cooper go to Faery ... that part was really cool. In the second part of the book, they get trapped in a texas town that's been taken over by an entity named Miko and her zombies and there's lots of action and fighting and some really hot sexy scenes. Miko is a waaay better bad guy (bad girl?) than Mr. Jordan was.

Hm, I don't know what to say that won't be spoilery. If you liked the action in the first book, there's lots more in this one. If you thought the first book didn't have enough sex, this has more. The stakes are higher, there are more monsters, more characters ... all the way around it's "more" and I really enjoyed that.

The downsides? Kai isn't in this, Opel isn't either, so if you really wanted to read more of those characters youre out of luck (I read somewhere that the author will bring them back in later books tho). There are other, new characters that are just as cool IMO, and you do get a lot more of the warlock and Cooper.

The other thing is the sex and violence ... I thought the adult content made total sense in the story, but honestly if you only read Harlequins the book will probably be too much for you. If you read other kinds of books like scifi and fantasy and horror, I think you'll like it as much as I did. But on that same note, if you're a parent I wouldn't just hand this off to your young (under 15) kid ... I'd read this first to make sure youre comfortable with your kid reading it. And then you'll probably keep it for yourself!

Now where's Book 3????

Book 2 Kicks an Already Excellent Series Up a Notch 6. November 2010
Von Daniel R. Robichaud II - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I was pretty well captivated by Spellbent, the first volume in the Jessie Shimmer series of urban fantasy novels. That one was a thrill ride and a half, which used humor and some sharply drawn characters to really kick some fantasy fiction butt. What do we have with Shotgun Sorceress? More of the same...

Butt kicking characters? check.

Dark fantasy doings? Check.

Humor to leaven the mood? Check.

A thrilling plot? Check.

Some emotional honesty? Check.

Good writing? Check.

Plotwise, this book picks up shortly after the first one leaves off (readers might be best served starting with that one before coming to this). The first half of Shotgun Sorceress deals with the repercussions of Jessie's actions in the previous book. Lots of fun and some weird twists I never anticipated.

Then, things ship from Columbus, Ohio down to Texas and the book really kicks into overdrive. A strange creature called Miko is doing some nasty stuff, and it's up to Jessie and her cast of colorful friends to put a stop to it. I read this novel in a flash, and am already hungry for part 3.

Lucy Snyder has a way of blending urban fantasy, the macabre, a love story, intense action, lucid writing, and quirky characters into incredibly entertaining fiction. I highly recommend this book.

A Shotgun Blast of Awesome 7. November 2010
Von Scott Slemmons - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
Lucy A. Snyder's sequel to her debut novel "Spellbent" picks up just after the end of the first novel. Jessie Shimmer has successfully rescued her lover Cooper from Hell after the worst week of her life, and come out of the experience with a magic eye, a hellfire arm, and a formerly cute ferret familiar that's now a giant spider monster. All she wants to do is curl up and recuperate from her efforts, but first she has to make nice with the local wizard's council in a nasty corner of the faerie realm, and after that, the vengeful alien gods of magic send her to Texas -- specifically, a corner of the Lone Star State bled dry of magic and ruled by a monstrous but impossibly sexy soul harvester named Miko. Can Jessie beat the odds a second time and save her friends and an entire town from horrific evil? Or are her magically debased emotions going to see her spending eternity as Miko's girltoy?

Snyder's story here is a great deal darker than her previous one. Already stressed out after the first novel's adventures, Jessie's emotions are on a hair-trigger now, even considering Miko's power to artificially exaggerate the emotions of humans. In fact, all our lead characters are on edge and snappish for most of the novel, with only Pal, Jessie's familiar, on a fairly even keel. Snyder's character work here really knocks things home, with even minor characters given full and fascinating personalities. The mood and settings are great, too -- from the beautiful but dangerous Faery to a cramped, besieged, and paranoid college campus to a makeshift pup tent in the backyard, all the settings make you feel like you're right there watching the action. And there's a ton of action, too -- Jessie may be a spellcaster, but she spends a lot of her time beating people up, shooting zombies, and running to catch up with the bad guys.

If you loved "Spellbent" -- and you better have, or else -- you're going to love "Shotgun Sorceress," too. Go pick it up.
