Moments of brilliance abound. 29. Juni 2012
Von Ronnie K. Stephens - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
This, Sierra Demulder's second poetry collection, is a vast improvement over her first book. The writing is solid. The craft is polished. Absolute brilliance drips from page after page. Still, there is an inconsistency in this collection that leaves me wanting more. I feel like I am watching Demulder stutter-step into greatness. There are so many mind-blowing lines, so many lines that linger for days and so many poems that gut-punch you with familiar honesty. Nothing is off limits. Nothing is held back.

In many ways, this collection echoes the strongest American writers of our time. In years to come, it will be praised as a turning point for young women in poetry programs across the country. What I take away is the irreconcilable distance between Demulder's writing one year ago and the incredible growth shouting from the pages of this collection. If this is any indication, Demulder is here to stay, and she's only going to get better. You owe it to yourself to read this book. You owe it to yourself to get in on the ground floor. You owe it to yourself to make Demulder a constant in conversations about the best young writers in this country.

One-Upping the Original 11. Juli 2013
Von Margaret Tiffany - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
While it's hazardous to use the words "unofficial sequel," New Shoes on a Dead Horse certainly reads like the logical continuation of DeMulder's earlier The Bones Below. The former was gorgeous and a brilliant debut, but New Shoes succeeds in what few sophomore efforts fail to do-- one-upping the original. New Shoes has the admirable quality of being noticeably careful, every word deliberate, every line written 100 times or more. It's rehearsed but not clinical, showing a more mature dedication to precision that DeMulder's earlier work.

"The Genius," a character that is weaved into many of the poems in this collection is modeled after the Roman idea that a "magical divine entity" called a genius, would reside in the walls of an artist's studio and provide them inspiration. The Genius is the most intriguing character in poetry today. He opens a Soup Kitchen with the advertisement "You Will Find Everything Here." His beard his forcefully shaved with the admonishment, "we only carry what we think we need." He's got a bitch of a boss who edits her diary. He's every bit of negativity, but he makes surprising revelations.

DeMulder's "On Watching Someone You Love Love Someone Else," has quickly become an internet sensation, because of it's lure for the pre-teen set undoubtedly, but also because of it's beautiful and simple, yet unique, capturing of a well-known emotion:

"You will find her bobby pins lying innocently on his bathroom
sink. Her bobby pin. They look like the wiry legs of spiders,
splinters of her undressing in his bed. Do not say anything.
Think of stealing them, wearing them home in your hair."

New Shoes on a Dead Horse also provides further insight into DeMulder's back-story. There are familial anecdotes, Minnesota backdrops, and of course, more tales of love done wrong. Read "The Genius Falls Asleep in Church" and die a little bit. Okay? Okay.

Amazing 22. Juli 2012
Von Ixcila - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
Good poets make you feel present in their bodies, getting high off their endorphins and feeling every gut-check with total immediacy. Great poets make themselves feel present in your own. You find yourself running the events of your life by them like it's second nature. Sierra accomplishes both, and makes it look easy. It's not, and few poets can do what she does. New Shoes on a Dead Horse is never pretentious, and devastatingly human. It should be required reading for any young poet: an object lesson in how to make done-to-death subject matter feel brand new.

This book hasn't left my coffee table because I can't bring myself to put it away. I devoured this. I sort of want a copy for every room in my apartment.
