Kurzbeschreibung

In her revealing memoir, "Shifting Sands," T.L. McCown shares insights into the Saudi Arabian culture which were previously hidden to the Western world. Having had a unique opportunity to experience the "inner circle" (as coined by best-selling author Jean Sasson) of Saudi Arabia’s royal family first-hand, T.L. chronicles her experiences and offers unique insight gained from sharing 10 years of life with her Princess in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. When the Islamic-controlled East meets West in this illuminating adventure through the mysterious world of Arabia, a startling and unexpected result is produced. Two women from completely different worlds wind up developing a deep friendship built through sharing their fears, dreams, beliefs, and challenges of life in the desert. As the reader encounters the humorous results of Westerners living in a foreign land, the extravagance of royal weddings, remote Bedouin villages, radical Islamic clerics, and the chilling fear of experiencing the effects of terrorism, the differences and similarities between T.L. and the princess are unveiled. "Shifting Sands" reveals the reality of life for a Christian, Western expatriate in the Middle East who discovers a special relationship with a Muslim princess. As terrorism and pressure from the Islamic religious police invades both of their lives, they fight to keep their dream of bringing liberation to the women of Saudi Arabia, and their friendship alive.
*****
T.L. lived and worked in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. For this decade, she worked with her Princess daily while befriending hundreds of other wonderful Saudi women. T.L., under the request of her Princess, is responsible for starting the first educational learning center for women in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom. Her story begins with "Shifting Sands" and is continued through her second title, "Creating Shamsiyah: Empowering the Saudi Feminist Movement."

I gave this 2 stars as it was kind of a build up with a big let down as it ended so abrubtly. Having read many other books on Saudi Arabia and Saudi Princesses I expected more about thier life, this was mostly about the author and her life. The author alludes to the fact that she and the princess will come to a bad end, early in the book and though out the book. But you find you will need to order the sequel to find out how the Princess and the author part ways. I couldnt wait to get back to it this morning to find out how it ends but it leaves you hanging. The title should say "Part one"

A fascinating book if you want to peak under the veil of life in Saudi from a woman's perspective. My only disappointment was it ended too soon, when is the sequel coming???

It was interesting until about half way through when it became rather repetitive in that although there were many more projects with the princess, the relationship with the princess did not change. I understand that in the next book in the series, this changes.

2.0 von 5 Sternen For shame 17. Januar 2014

This book was an interesting account of the author's life in Saudi Arabia, but poorly written. I cannot believe that someone who, supposedly, has a masters' degree and tutored children in English, could turn out writing like this. Some examples: council instead of counsel, sole instead of soul, morn instead of mourn, boddess for bodice, adorning for donning, loose for lose, collaborate for elaborate, gate for gait, and the absence of "the" where it should be. Add these examples to the often poor sentence structure. I hope she 1) takes a remedial course in English grammar or 2) hires a good editor or ghost writer for her next book.

Just a re-hash of the fascinating princess trilogy. The princess books overcame the flaws in her writing with the fascinating subject matter. I put this one down after several chapters in large part because it did not.
