There's a marvelous set piece early on--a poker game at which this invisible woman not only takes a seat but also makes bets, wins hands, and smokes lipsticked cigarettes. Of course Mallory is largely on her own in the investigation: she insults her only two friends and alienates all her police colleagues with her weird, unorthodox methods.
O'Connell is a richly poetic writer who fills her books with fleeting samples of everyone from Rilke and T.S. Eliot to Billie Holiday. This was the first Mallory book I read and I fell in love with her and Charles. Okay, I didn't really get the complex story lines with the serveral murders, different times and magic tricks untill the socond time I read it , but I enjoy reading O'Connells prose over and over again. I even have a favorite sentence: "They bowed to the logic of their situation." (have fun trying to find it).
I also have favorite scenes I look forward to when reading (when Mallorys sees Charles perfect face in the mirror, when Charles can't decide if Maollry and Malakai will embrace or hit each other, when Mallory meets the lawyer on times square etc)
Okay so I admit it: the plot is not that important to me - and it is very easy to forget about it, as other things and scenes and people are in the foreground but so what? I enjoyed reading Shell Game and I am determined to read it a fourth and fifth time!

After buying Shell Game, I told myself to re-read the entire series to get me back into that fevered pitch stage that came after reading Stone Angel. But, of course, I started reading Shell Game and couldn't put it down! It was a one-weekend read for me, and I loved every page. I didn't have any trouble getting back into the groove of Mallory and her unique personality, as well as Charles and his goofy grin. I look forward to more works, Mallory-driven or not, as Judas Child was also a GREAT work of fiction.

Regardless of what other reviewers have noted, I felt that this book was one of her best!!! It was very intense and I found that for a few brief moments there were some chinks in Mallory's thick shell. I found some of the story confusing but Mallory's relationship with Malachi was incredibly satisfying.
