I have never written an Amazon book review before now, but I have often relied on book reviews to help me make a selection. I'm writing this book review now in the hope I can save someone else from wasting their time and money.
I don't think I've ever felt as disappointed, or even ANGRY, as when I began reading this book. [...]Was I looking for a literary masterpiece when I bought the book? No, I wanted basic, useful information about WSS 3.0. There is ABSOLUTELY NO USEFUL INFORMATION IN THE ENTIRE BOOK. The Microsoft marketing pages are infinitely more edifying and informative.
Kevin Foster's book is the first of three books I bought to help me learn WSS enough support our office users on a hosted SharePoint server. To my surprise, the best book by far for nailing down basic end user concepts and how-tos is Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Step by Step.
Here are Kevin's own words (carefully reproduced faithfully here), from page 89, "Windows SharePoint Services: Questions and its Introduction". This is the entire "chapter" and is exemplary of the entire book.
" There are many questions asked about Windows SharePoint Services in general, and while it is a program worth having, there are still lingering doubts as to its use, but this shouldn't stop any person from purchasing and using one to his advantage.
For one, questions are a testament to its great use, as people asking about SharePoint is a sure-fire evidence that it is really a product worth talking about, and this hints volumes of reasons to note.
Second, if there are questions then in this age of computers and easy information sharing, there will also be enough answers to flummoxed any person wishing to have his questions answered.
With these said, there is no doubt as to the veracity of SharePoint Services as being a service worth asking about and it is a great technology that allows the organizations as well as the business units, however big or small, to use it.
Using it creates efficiency of good note and may even lead to an improvement in terms of team productivity as it is a program that allows easy collaboration even for people who are far from each other.
In using SharePoint services, there is no geographic boundaries to limit the team members from communication and sharing inputs with each other.
This efficiency in communications is simply what is needed in any organization or company to work correctly in achieving the company goals and aspirations.
Imagine, reaching out through the use of SharePoint to give the necessary information to other team members so that they will not enter into business deals blindly and through a delivery system that is secure enough for its purposes."
I thought I might take the publisher to task, as well, for the book appears to me not to have been proofread, but as I looked, I could find no publisher name.
