I have used the previous edition of this book (on version 2007) to apply SharePoint framework for the team work support on the real projects in my company.
This new edition can be used as a SharePoint reference guide - for those who need more information on the tool, and who wish to apply SharePoint functions and features for the large and complex projects support, also helping to make any project team work more efficiently.

This is a very basic introduction to SharePoint for project managers. If you have never used SharePoint before, you will find this helpful. If you are a mature project manager with any basic understanding of the SharePoint tool, this book will be too shallow for you. I was able to review the entire book in under an hour. I do think if you have never used SharePoint before, this is a great book with which to start. If you are already familiar with creating lists and editing pages and were looking for a deeper dive on effective use, I would venture elsewhere.

Also, $20 is a very aggressive price. Should have been $9.99 and then I would not have felt so negative about the book.

The book has been a disappointment. I was hoping to have some good instruction on how to manage project in SharePoint. Instead, the book deals with SharePoint for most of the 200 pages and then steps lightly into the Project topics. The topics covered are very shallow and do not help as much as going to Microsoft's website. I wasted money on this one. I already have good SharePoint Books, I needed a book on SharePoint 2010 for Project Management as titled.

Taking a step back, this is perhaps one of the essential books that should be on the shelf (after having been read) for all SharePoint users. I read some of the other reviews and I think they might be taken out of context for the audience of the book. First of all, the goal of this book was to teach the business user how to set up a simple PMIS system with little to no Information Technology team involvement. Now if you're an IT Professional and you're knocking the book for being "too shallow", consider the book's audience and the goal. Dux walks you through the steps for building your site, from adding a document library to creating custom lists and project tracking lists. He also includes a 3 state workflow example which again is using all out of the box functionality with great explanation and plenty of pictures. This is the type of book that you can not only get through in a weekend, but it will also get you up and running on SharePoint and walk away with a working no-code solution. Again, I really think that this bok should be the first book that every SharePoint user reads.

The purpose of this book is to walk you through setting up SharePoint to be your Project Management Information System (PMIS). It also addresses why you should have a Project Management Information System and how it will aid you in managing your projects. If followed, this book will help you reduce communication inefficiencies so you can manage your projects more effectively. The book identifies which features will need to be included by your IT department and what you are able to do yourself when structuring your SharePoint site.

SharePoint 2010 for Project Management is set up in a workbook format and walks you through a variety of exercises to set up SharePoint so you can more effectively manage your projects. The first lesson is very basic and each lesson gets progressively more advanced. Each lesson explains the concepts to be covered then walks you step-by-step through each exercise. Included in the book are plenty of screen shots so you can see exactly what your site should look like as you are performing each exercise. Each lesson ends with a debriefing to review what you have just learned, a best practices checklist, and a summary.

This book also provides insight into how the features you are adding to your SharePoint site will help you manage specific areas of your project and why you would want to do so. For example, SharePoint 2010 for Project Management gives you the steps on how to set up a risk/issue log on your SharePoint site and also includes how to set up a workflow so any necessary approvals can bet tracked and stored on SharePoint.

There are several benefits from reading this book. First, the book was structured in a very clear and concise way. The format tells you what you are about to learn then walks you through the exercise and finally it reviews the lesson. This format creates a great learning opportunity because you are reinforcing each lesson multiple times. Second, the book starts with the basics and gradually builds on each lesson allowing you to build your skills to more complex tasks while you add functionality to your SharePoint site. Third, the author provides pictures and screenshots for many of the steps. Fourth, the book addresses how to integrate project management tools into SharePoint which is very useful.

If your work revolves around projects - whether you work in design, construction, technology or another field - and you use (or are required to use) Microsoft SharePoint, then you really need this book.

In this eagerly awaited update of the previous edition that covered SharePoint 2007, Dux Raymond Sy takes you by the hand and shows you the capabilities of SharePoint 2010 as a Project Management Information System, or PMIS. Having bought the first book, I was alerted by O'Reilly of the availability of the updated book. I grabbed the second edition as quickly as possible. The differences between SharePoint 2007 and 2010 are many, and it is preferable to get the edition that covers the version that you use at your place of work.

The renowned speaker, author, blogger and Microsoft MVP shows the SharePoint novice how to use the platform for creating a PMIS, managing stakeholder interaction, task distribution, project tracking, uploading documents and implementing workflows, and other important project steps.

Assuming you have been tasked with implementing SharePoint and have read a technical book and learned some of the ins and outs of this powerful software, you might be wondering `OK, so how do I use all that?' Dux first defines SharePoint thus: `SharePoint allows individuals in an organization to easily create and manage their own collaborative solutions'. He then proceeds to answer your query by taking you on a small tour of SharePoint's capabilities as a PMIS.

You might also be a project team member who has started to use SharePoint because it has recently been implemented at your company. In that case, this book will of tremendous help: a series of `Workshops' chock-full of screen captures form the skeleton of this book, making it easy to read for anyone interested in SharePoint or tasked with using it on a daily basis.

The compatibility with Microsoft Office and the familiar Office-like interface of SharePoint 2010 makes learning the basics a breeze with Sy's help. My only beef is that I wished the book could have been longer, specifically regarding the use of workflows. Coverage of the interaction between SharePoint and Visio would have also been helpful, but there are other books - of a more technical nature - that deal with Visio and workflow implementation.

All in all, this book is highly recommended, and a valuable addition to any SharePoint library. In fact, I advise you to start here if you are relatively new to SharePoint.
