“The best military adventure writer in the country.” Clive Cussler

Kurzbeschreibung

The new Gulf War is erupting, and this one will be far bloodier than the first. A newly powerful Iran is flexing its military muscle in the Middle East. The Iranians have declared the Persian Gulf their territorial waters-and an American ship has just been sunk to prove the point.

With a military racked by budget cuts and a public reluctant to fight, the president must end the crisis before it escalates. The solution: Project Future Flight, a surgical stealth campaign to silence Iran’s modern weapons. The personnel: Colonel Patrick McLanahan and the surviving crew of the Old Dog. The stakes: success-or full-scale war…

Author Dale Brown:

Former U.S. Air Force captain Dale Brown is the superstar author of 24 best-selling action-adventure “techno-thriller” novels: FLIGHT OF THE OLD DOG (1987), SILVER TOWER (1988), DAY OF THE CHEETAH (1989), HAMMERHEADS (1990), SKY MASTERS (1991), NIGHT OF THE HAWK (1992), CHAINS OF COMMAND (1993), STORMING HEAVEN (1994), SHADOWS OF STEEL (1996), FATAL TERRAIN (1997), THE TIN MAN (1998), BATTLE BORN, (1999), WARRIOR CLASS (2001), WINGS OF FIRE (2002), AIR BATTLE FORCE (2003), PLAN OF ATTACK (2004), ACT OF WAR (2005), EDGE OF BATTLE (2006), STRIKE FORCE (2007), SHADOW COMMAND (2008), ROGUE FORCES (2009), EXECUTIVE INTENT (2010), A TIME FOR PATRIOTS (2011), and TIGER’S CLAW (2012). His 25th novel, entitled STARFIRE, is scheduled for release in early 2014. He is also the co-author of the best-selling DREAMLAND techno-thriller series and writer and technical consultant of the Act of War PC real-time strategy game published by Atari Interactive, and the Megafortress PC flight simulator by Three-Sixty Pacific. Dale’s novels are published in 11 languages and distributed to over 70 countries. Worldwide sales of his novels, audiobooks, e-books, and computer games exceed 15 million copies.

Dale was born in Buffalo, New York on November 2, 1956. He graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Western European History and received an Air Force commission in 1978. He was a member of the first class of Air Force ROTC cadets to qualify for and complete the grueling three-week U.S. Army Airborne Infantry paratrooper training course at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1977.

Dale was a navigator-bombardier in the B-52G Stratofortress heavy bomber and the FB-111A supersonic medium bomber, and an instructor on aircrew life support and combat survival, evasion, resistance, and escape. He is the recipient of several military decorations and awards including the Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Combat Crew Award, and the Marksmanship ribbon.

Dale is a command pilot in Angel Flight West, a group that volunteer their time, skills, and aircraft to fly needy medical patients free of charge to receive medical treatment. Dale is also a mission pilot and deputy squadron commander in the Civil Air Patrol, which performs search and rescue, disaster relief, humanitarian assistance, surveillance, and many other missions in support of the U.S. Air Force and other federal agencies. He supports a number of organizations to promote law enforcement, education, literacy, and support for military veterans and their families.

3.0 von 5 Sternen hmmmm made up stuff 23. Dezember 1998
Format:Taschenbuch
Its fine for an author to make stuff up. but when he is supposedly describing real-world items, the author has a responsibility to get things right. Harm, shooting down an awacs? if harm could do that , then aircraft wouldnt carry amraams! a sam 10 ,hits a b2 on the wing,, the b2 - damaged -carries on. the sam 10 has a 300 lb + warhead. you tell me what actualy contact detonation would do. its too jingoistic- when Clancy does it- he does research Brown just wants the US to win, and it will- even if physics has to get bent in the process..'cloaking device'? positrons? hmmmmmmmmmmm/ maybe his next novel should be a startrek

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good Book - Inaccurate Cover 20. Februar 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
Dale Brown almost always writes gripping stuff. Shadows of Steel is no different. While Dale Brown certainly takes quite a few creative liberties and some of the scenarios in his books may seem far fetched, Shadows of Steel is generally realistic. Iran is the key country in this book, and Brown gives them the military might to hold all the power in the Persian Gulf. It's up to Brown's hero Patrick McLanahan to destroy the Iranian threat using America's finest, the B-2 Bomber.
The only real problem I had with the book was its cover. If you read Cyrillic and know your Russian navy, the aircraft carrier on the cover is the "Kiev". Brown's carrier in the book is the "Varyag", a totally different ship than the cover, and which was not completed and currently remains in dry dock in the Ukraine, rusting away indefinitely. Despite the incorrect cover, I praise Dale Brown for his originality in predicting the sale of the carrier to China, something which is very likely to happen.
Another good book by Dale Brown that every serious military techno-thriller enthusiast should have on their bookshelf. For people who don't like all the technical information that is critical in a book in this genre, stay away! Dale Brown puts all the technical information in his books for a reason, to make them realistic. People who get overwhelmed by these kinds of books shouldn't write negative reviews just because of that. If you don't like technical information, don't read techno-thrillers. But don't put down the author for authenticity. Still, serious fans will enjoy this book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Step back Tom Clancy! 7. Juni 1998
Format:Taschenbuch
Wow! A superfast-paced military action thriller which is just about the right length. Iran buys a blackmarket aircraft carrier from the Russians, via China and develops its own nuclear missile capability. A covert American spy ship is sunk by Iranian MiGs in the Persian Gulf, and to avoid a Gulf War 2 breaking out, the President orders our old friend Patrick McLanahan in with a B-2 stealth bomber, souped up and modified with an assortment of interesting, and very much realistic and feasible weaponry. The idea of selecting different types of non-lethal cargoes(which do prove to be lethal - the acid sludge which causes aircraft to crash!) which make the attacks look like mechanical defects was a highly original one. Add to that a juicy sex sequence between a US officer and a beautiful female Arab commando(who the hell's GI Jane when you've got Riza Mehrouzi!), plenty of thrills for military hardware nuts and hardened stealth bomber fans, technics galore . . . what more can I say? Read this book now and I guarantee you won't be disappointed! Can't wait for Fatal Terrain and The Tin Man!

2.0 von 5 Sternen Disappointing......too much techno-babble.... 13. Januar 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
I have been a fan of Dale Brown since Flight of the Old Dog and have read and enjoyed most of his work. Shadows of Steel however falls far short of Dale's other adventures. The old characters are welcomed back but the development of the new characters is shallow. He fills so much space with the techno-babble that one loses sight of the rather thin plot line. I enjoyed the fight sequences of Hammerheads, Day of the Cheetah and Silver Tower because they were done without every other word being a weapons acronym - a non-military reader could follow along and still remember the plot after the conclusion of the battle. With Shadows of Steel, I found myself skimming pages, looking for the end of the battle sequence, so I could return to plot and dialogue. This is the first lemon I've picked up from Mr. Brown and certainly won't give up on him because of it. I'm still hoping to read another book as good as Flight of the Old Dog, from any author in this genre. That, in my humble opinion was Dale's masterpiece.

3.0 von 5 Sternen "Enjoyable, but lacking in some areas." 15. Juli 1998
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
It's America's ultimate nightmare. Iran has an aircraft carrier, and they're not afraid to use it. "Shadows of Steel" doesn't waste time getting to the action. The Gulf nations launch a pre-emptive strike against a heavily fortified Iranian island on page one. In response, an American spy ship is sunk, and the crisis snowballs from there.
The combat scenes were written very well, and Brown uses lots of very interesting hi-tech weapons to fight Iran. However, this book was shorter than his previous works. Brown also seemed to be lacking in character development, something he has immensely improved on in his last few novels. More focus should have been given to McLanahan and his relationships with his wife and his co-pilot, Colonel Jameison.

Format:Taschenbuch
Most of Dale Browns' books are great, but he and his editor must have been asleep at the beginning of this one. A complete contradiction between pages 60 and 64 made me quit reading it.
Page 60: Iranian ambassador pledges to VP "..we will remove our aircraft carrier from the gulf." VP: "..an interesting idea..must present it to the President."
Page 64: National security advisor (to VP): "..You heard me right ..Iran's new aircraft carrier has put to sea." VP: "Iran has an aircraft carrier(words emphasized)? Since when?" in complete surprise.

The total conversations I excerpted from make it even more preposterous. After that I quit. The book was completely ruined.
