Oh yeah, James is finally on the offensive. At the end of the fifth book we learned what he was here for and to do it, he must drive the Empire from Madoc.
when spring arrives, he's ready. Taking everyone from The Ranch with him, he heads around the northern shore of the Sea of the Gods and winds up at Lythylla.
Oh, along the way he learns something about one of his companions, something that will greatly enhance his chances of succeeding in his mission.
Battles. Oh the battles. Where before he had more or less reacted to what was going on around him, this time, he's ready. Crystals powered and ready to go, most held specific spells to be used during the battles. One such was rather clever. He used two crystals to create a bridge over the river so the enemy could be attacked from behind. James uses his brain in this one. Also, the 'Seeds' sown into the beds of various caravans yield interesting results.
Here we get to see behind the scenes as it were of the Empire's mages. Oh yes, they go after him en mass. The ending battle has James and all of his forces pitted against almost the entire mage population of the Empire and a greater portion of the Empire's northern army. What happens there sets the stage for book seven and the climactic ending.
The most action packed book of the series. Left me breathless.
