All that glitters . . .

Sylvie was a pleaser. She did as her mother pleased, and she did as her fiancé pleased. Then she did as she pleased. Determined to take back her life, she heads to the hills instead of the altar on the day she's to wed. Coming across a quaint, country inn with an intriguing name, she impulsively checks in. Peopled with an odd assortment of characters, the inn has clearly seen better days; even the regulars have a bit of wear on them.

Disillusioned with love and his law enforcement career, Alex is determined to find a happy medium. For now, casual affairs and private investigation work fills the bill. Until he locates the runaway bride of a client and falls in love with her.

When Sylvie learns Alex isn’t the businessman he pretends to be, but a streetwise P.I. hired by her ex to find her, the glitter begins to fade. Adding insult to injury, he buys the inn and asks for her help in restoring it to its former glory, not an easy task with someone sabotaging their efforts. Forced to work together, both learn about relationships, expectations, and acceptance among family members as well as strangers who become like family.

Mehr über den Autor

Unable to get enough of the type of women's fiction she likes, Joyce started creating her own. One of her books, Serendipity House, was named the best indie romance of 2011 by Lynn of Red Adept Reviews. As the mother of four grown daughters, she's familiar with the problems women face finding love, raising children, and stepping back when necessary. All of her books place an emphasis on love and family dynamics. She is happiest when she's secluded in her office creating new worlds and people to populate them. When she's not taxing her brain with plot, structure, and grammar, she likes to sew, particularly quilts. When she really wants to rest her brain, she chills out in front of the TV and usually falls asleep. Please visit her website, for information about her books.

Very well written, this was more than a romance, more than a mystery. The book centers on the lives of several characters and it was very easy to get caught up in it all. I'm hoping for another book by this author.

As the first reader said, not quite a mystery or a romance but a little of both with true life thrown in. By the time I was finished I cared about these characters and wanted to know more. Thanks for a quick, satisfying and enjoyable read. Looking forward to more.

Plot/Storyline: 5 Stars

You might be a bit surprised at seeing the cover of this novel on one of my review blog posts. However, the cover belies the depth of this novel. It was not just a romance; it was a wonderful story of a woman who overcomes her current bad relationships, and it even had a little mystery thrown in for good measure.

At heart, this was a romance, yet the story never descends into the sappy dialogue and thought processes of a swooning nymphette. Instead, it was the story of a real woman, in a real life, who finds a real relationship that includes a few heart-fluttery moments. Although, even though I am picky about romance in books, I really enjoyed the romance portion of this one. Unlike many in its genre, it offered a more pragmatic view of love in today's society.

The thread dealing with Sophie's relationship with her mother was one to which I think many readers, both male and female, could relate. As I read, I began looking forward to reading those scenes in which Sylvie's mother appeared. I felt Sylvie's pain and understood her confusion as to how to deal with her mother.

The little mystery was downplayed throughout the story. While it wasn't a big part of the plot, it was still a nice little side thread.

Warning: There were some tear-jerker moments, so have a tissue handy during the second half. While there was some sex, it was not very graphic at all. Surprisingly, they were not "sex scenes," rather, they were scenes of "making love."

Characters: 5 Stars

Sylvie was a terrific main character. I enjoyed watching her character grow from a weak-willed girl into a strong woman. Her growth flowed naturally within the storyline. She emerged as a heroine in every aspect of her life, romantic, social, and familial.

Alex Clemenceau was cleverly developed with a minimal amount of passages from his viewpoint. The sections from his perspective were interwoven nicely to give background and feelings. His grandmother's personality was a wonderful addition as it helped to explain Alex's.

Sylvie's mother was my favorite character just because she was so funny, while at the same time evoking more sympathy for Sylvie.

Brad, Cindy, and the patrons of the Inn were fantastic additions to the story. Each one had their own interesting story. Overall, the character introductions were handled adroitly.

Writing Style: 5 Stars

The sentence structuring was complex enough to give an intelligent read without getting bogged down under its own weight. The descriptions were pictorial and leant a certain charm to the setting. The dialogue was rich and authentic.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Sweet romance with realistic characters 6. Februar 2011

Sylvie has always been a pleaser, doing exactly what was expected of her. On the day she is to be wed, she finally makes a decision for herself, one that leads her to Serendipity House and changes the course of her future.

This novel is packed full of lovable, realistic characters and a wonderful, if rocky, romance. Despite its length (the equivalent of about 180 pages) it covers over two years, but the author does this well. She focuses on the events fully, then expresses the passage of time in a way that flows and feels natural.

I love a good romance, and this was a great romance, with a bit of mystery, suspense and enough strife to make me really feel for the characters without seeming contrived. I look forward to reading more from this author.

4.0 von 5 Sternen An engaging summer read 17. Juni 2012

This was my first full-length novel read on my Kindle and I enjoyed it thoroughly. The cast of characters in this book are composites of people we all know, including Sylvie's self-possessed whiny mother. Watching the interplay between mother and daughter as Sylvie evolves her personality was the highlight of the book. Alex's development was also fun to watch. By the end, I was fully engaged with all the characters and cared about them. Well-written, sharp dialogue and intriguing internal monologue combined with doses of suspense, mystery and romance. A very satisfying read.
