Kurzbeschreibung

In Detail

Sencha Touch is one of the most popular HTML5 and JavaScript frameworks for building touch-based mobile devices. Using Sencha Touch, you can create applications for touch mobile devices with ease, and once created, the same application works on multiple platforms – iOS, Android, Blackberry – without having to change anything.

Sencha Touch Cookbook (2nd edition) is a practical, hands-on guide with easy to follow recipes that provide you with clear, step-by-step instructions, which will help you take complete advantage of the power of Sencha Touch 2 and will help you to build amazing applications for the mobile world.

Sencha Touch Cookbook (2nd edition) starts by showing you how to set up your project for development, then walks through building, packaging, and running it in a browser, emulator, or a real device. With the groundwork set, the subsequent recipes of the book take you through the different UI components offered by the framework and explains how to use them, when to use them, and, if needed, how to extend them for your own application need.

You will also learn how to model your client side data, load data from different data sources, and use them on the data-centric UI components. The later parts of the book cover the practical day-to-day problems like how to create a custom view, how to take your application offline and support automatic sync, how to utilize the Geolocation to learn more about the user, how to utilize device features such as camera, contact, orientation, and how to link your application behaviour with the device buttons such as Back, Search, and so on. At the end, the book shows you how to create native packages without using PhoneGap/Cordova using Sencha Cmd.

Using this book, you will learn everything about using Sencha Touch classes and components to build mobile applications that can run across multiple platforms.

Approach

The book is written in a Cookbook style, presenting examples in the style of recipes, allowing you to go directly to your topic of interest or follow topics throughout a chapter to gain in-depth knowledge.

Who this book is for

Sencha Touch Cookbook (2nd edition) is great for developers who are new to Sencha Touch and who are looking to get a good hold on what the Sencha Touch framework offers and how to use it to build a great touch-based mobile application running on different platforms. It is assumed that you will have some experience in HTML, CSS, DOM, and JavaScript. To truly appreciate the framework capability and take full advantage of the book, readers are expected to have one or more mobile devices.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Possibly the best eBook on Sencha Touch 2 4. Mai 2014
Von Andrew - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This ebook is possibly the best Sencha Touch 2 book out there.

It's clear from the start that it contains everything you need to get up and running with Sencha Touch, as it start by helping you setup your development environment with an IDE and Cordova for Android, iOS and Blackberry.

In addition, the examples are there to get the reader started. I found the example to be very helpful and the incremental steps very well organized.

However, the book starts from Sencha Touch 2.2.1, which may be the reason why some of the example don't work out of the box.

For example, in chapter 4, using Ext.viewport.Default.getOrientation() doesn't work as indicated, the correct code to use with the more current Sencha Touch 2.3.1 is Ext.Viewport.getOrientation()

Likewise, the listener for orientation change doesn't work (at this time this seems to be a known issue in Sencha Touch).

It may be unfair to take a star off the book, but being a book for a fast developing field I would expect updates to the Kindle content (like a real-time errata) or at least to the code samples on the book's website.

LATER EDIT:
I decided to come back and dock another star off my review, because the book bases its Cordova info on version 2. At the time the book was published (August 2013), Cordova 3 was already available and its integration with Sencha runs a bit deeper via the collaboration between Cordova CLI and SenchaCmd. The project setup method described in the book was already dated just as the book came out (via the CLI it doesn't just work out of the box but the complicated file copy method from the book doesn't work anymore). I can't really recommend this book for its code samples but more for the 'how-to' general info.

5.0 von 5 Sternen The best sencha touch2 solutions to your problems! 25. November 2013
Von Sagi - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
This book gives you a full array of anything you might need to know for building your own hybrid mobile applications and saves you time by its problem-solution way of answering the simple and the sophisticated questions.

sAlthough stated that the book is intended to those who have a good understanding in the subject,
This book is wonderful both for the newbee and the experienced developer.
It will also teach you on how to use apache cordova (which makes you able to integrate your app with your phone's native features)

You will learn ALL you need to know about creating and submitting forms including search fields, validation, date picker, toggles, spinners, checkboxs and grouping them, etc.

On a personal note- I really enjoyed it, even as an experienced sencha touch developer.
He shows you how ST2 is wonderful both for the programmer and the designer,
He includes all the important aspects of the framework, both the known and the less known features of it.

One of the few things I couldn't find any better source for, is how Ajit teaches you to build completly customized and new views.
You will learn how to use all the aspects of data, creation, stores, proxies.

There are many gems all throughout the book : How to use all kinds of graphs, getting the information from the store to the graphs, using google maps, using the devices' physical buttons and more!!

In conclussion , buy it, understand it, it will be your most helpful tool in your box of developing hybrid apps.
4.0 von 5 Sternen a pratical guide to Sencha Touch Framework 3. Dezember 2013
Von Morga Massimiliano - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
The book is complete, very well written and covers all the various features of the Sencha's framework.
Is an excellent starting point for anyone wishing to start working in the field of mobile development (cross-device ) and knows the basic capabilities of HTML5 and JScript.
The book is divided into chapters focused on individual aspects of the framework and this makes it useful, exactly like a cookbook, even after an initial reading for one-shot consultation on specific topics (data management, layout, etc ...)
The examples reported cover all the individual aspects of the framework (although it is absent a complex example that combines all the capabilities) and are all ready-to-use via GITHUB so that the reader can quickly recreate the environment to try the code and do own modifications.
Recommended for those who want to immediately put hands on code and quickly learn the basics of mobile development with Sencha or for those who already know the framework and are in need of a quick solution to a problem (as the slogan says on cover "quick answer to common problems")
4.0 von 5 Sternen A cookbook, and a good one at that! 9. Januar 2014
Von Iwan van der Schoor - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I initially read the book thinking I would learn some "new cool things" and then went back to page 1, and started reading it for what it is: a cookbook.
You follow the recipe and you get the results. I actually really enjoyed going through this book even though I am a fairly advanced Sencha Touch user already, I liked how the book flows:
1. Getting ready
2. How to do it (the recipe)
3. How it actually works

So if you are a beginning engineer (or in some cases even a more advanced engineer) there is a lot to learn, besides giving you a "copy and paste" recipe, they explain in more depth how it works, without having to go study the documentation for it.

I feel the book is a very good resource next to the Sencha Touch documentation.
5.0 von 5 Sternen It's like a story... 8. Oktober 2013
Von Aftab Alam - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Cookbooks are assemblage of common, popular and essential recipes to solve
problems. They could act as quick reference or to understand how a solution
should be approached. These books have important position on a programmer's
bookshelf and are most referenced titles.

Coming with those expectations this book didn't fall short in any way.
Individual chapters are coupled so nicely that they provide appeal of a
story. One nice thing about this book is that it could be referred even
if you have just started with Sencha. It's touching almost every aspect
of Sencha App development workflow and is a worthy and essential read.
