In Detail

Sencha Architect is a visual app builder that empowers a developer (and a development team) to design, develop, and deploy apps from a single and integrated environment. It also provides support for Ext JS and Sencha Touch development.

Sencha Architect App Development is a practical, hands-on guide that will teach you how to develop a complete application with Ext JS and Sencha Touch. You will learn everything from creating the project, including creating the models, views, controllers and stores, to the build to production. Along the way, this book also highlights the Sencha Architect features that will help you to improve your productivity.

Sencha Architect App Development starts by describing Sencha Architect, the Toolbox, Project Inspector, Confi Panel, Toolbar, the Canvas: Design View, and Code Editor.

You will then learn how to develop a complete application with Ext JS using the MVC architecture, and also how to integrate Sencha Architect with server side code such as PHP and MySQL. You will also learn how to develop a complete application with Sencha Touch, and how to integrate Sencha Architect with PhoneGap (a third-party mobile open source library).

At the end of the book, you will be given some tips and tricks that will help your development even more, and you will also learn how to build, publish, and package an application natively using Sencha Command and Sencha Architect.

A standard tutorial-based approach for using Sencha Architect to develop applications in Ext JS and Sencha Touch.

Who this book is for

Sencha Architect App Development is for Ext JS and Sencha Touch developers that are looking to improve their productivity by using Sencha Architect for app development. Basic knowledge of Ext JS and Sencha Touch is required.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Work through the Excersies befor you Publish!!!!!!!!! 10. März 2014

Another book where a conscious effort has not been made to work through the exercises. Lack of explanations in the book including how to setup the environment. Why do I have to debug php errors that are part of the setup when the book is aoubt a completely different topic? The book is in English but some of the accompanying files are in Portuguese. Not only do I have to Google to find my errors, but also have to translate the config files. Don't even know what is waiting further down the road. Stick to one language please! Haven't gotten past the 2nd chapter and already frustrated. It's these types of resources that make you dump a possibly good technology before you even get started. If I get frustrated with a book I will only give one star because I can't give zero.

Loiane, next time you write a book I will be more than happy to collaborate. I really believe you know the subject well but are having trouble communicating it.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Examples too Simple, Explanations too short...a missed opportunity. 14. November 2013

Sencha Architect (SA) App Development is a very short book (about 93 pages of actual content). I am new to Ext JS but have been doing software development for over 10 years. So, I think I am aware of my own limitations vs limitations in the content of this book.

It covers the basic interface, creating a simple Sencha Ext app, simple sencha touch app, some tips/tricks and then publshing and packaging and other resources. Overall this is not a beginners book. But you could pick it up and follow it. Groner is trying to provide some insight on using Architect vs regurgitating online help descriptions, which I can appreciate. But I didn't feel like I was getting insight from an experienced Sencha developer on how to use SA in an intelligent way beyond simple, single web pages.

Groner attempts to briefly explain MVC (just 1 page), but I find it a clumsy definition and still left me bewildered. I do know what MVC is, but her definition is poorly presented. She has to mention MVC though because SA is an MVC oriented development approach. But explanations are short.. for everything. Quite often, I found myself asking "why do you have to do that ?".

So, this book lacks insight from an experienced developer about developing meaningful applications. The 2 examples she provides are overly simple and lack depth. I can understand you don't want to confuse the reader with complex examples but without meaningful examples, and taking the time to actually explain things, you can't appreciate the capabilities of SA and the development approach you need to take. The book is afterall called "App Development", not "Overly simple examples for clicking buttons"

The examples are for beginners, but it requires that you know a Ext JS to an intermediate level. Groner could have included more sophisticated examples to walk through but I think she was trying to appeal to a wide audience. But in doing so, this book misses the mark in terms providing insight into using SA. You would gain almost as much from the online videos than using this book. The screenshots are not very well set out, and at first are confusing. Frankly, she could have used more page space to improve the flow. There is clear numbering of the order of steps in the screen shots for doing the tasks. Groner points out where things go to accomplish the objective and there is not much else beyond briefly explaining it to support the MVC principles.

I was left with more questions about SA after reading it. The back cover is a bit misleading as the topics are covered, but not to an extent that you can get through a meaningful application.

So, should you get this book ? NO. There is a wealth of online information from Sencha, forums and blogs that you can glean to accomplish the same thing.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Learning Architect? This book is for you! 2. September 2013
Von Phillip M Strong - Veröffentlicht auf
As a lead engineer on the team that builds Sencha Architect I think it's safe to say I have a very strong opinion regarding material coving SA. Loiane Groner does a magnificent job covering all the bases in this book. It's an easy read cover to cover while also being a valuable reference to go back to. Everything you want from a technical book in my opinion.

The application builds are just the right size and complexity; not to simple and not overly complex. This will aid both beginners and advanced users. I loved that tips and tricks were prolific throughout the book and also had a section all its own. Even the most advanced users will learn something from this book, I'm certain.

The web has a wealth of knowledge about Sencha Architect but it's spread out across numerous sites and forum posts (Stack Overflow, Sencha forums, Architect docs, etc ...). Loaine brings it all together in a nice package called a book! It has an index, which is literally a super power in our world of disseminated information!

The examples on the book are too basic. I recommend Sencha Touch 2 and Learning Ext JS 4 before you read this book. You will get more out of this book that way, At least I did.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Helpful book 6. September 2013

If you haven't used Sencha Architect to build your Sencha applications, you are totally missing out. Sencha Architect is essentially a WYSIWYG editor that allows you to construct applications by dragging and dropping components into the stage area. Sencha Architect App Development from Packt publishing is a really helpful book that shows you how to construct an application in Sencha Architect from start to finish.

Sencha Architect App Development is a fairly quick read. It is just over a hundred pages, but there is a ton of knowledge packed in its pages.

The book begins by introducing Sencha Architect and walking through the more basic features like the UI, the canvas and the inspector. By the time you've completed the first chapter, you should at least know your way around the interface.

Next, we are shown how to create an application. I was particularly impressed that there was a discussion of MVC and the proper way to structure your application. In a book that primarily focuses on just creating applications using a GUI, it's refreshing to see application structure come into the conversation.

After that, we dive deeper into the internals of creating an application. Namely, models, stores, views and controllers. There is also a discussion of how to tie the user's phone contacts into the data store using Phonegap.

There is an entire chapter on tips and tricks that can be implemented with Sencha Architect. These range from using Sencha Architect with Eclipse to creating internationalized applications.

The next chapter is about using resources such as stylesheets and external JavaScript files in Sencha Architect. There is also a really useful section about how to use Google Maps.

The final chapter discusses methods for deploying Sencha applications to iOS, Android Windows 8 and Blackberry 10 applications. There is a brief introduction to using Sencha Cmd with Sencha Architect, but I would have liked to see more in that regard.

Sencha Architecture App Development is a really useful book that I wish I had read a long time ago. It packs in really useful tidbits that can make anyone a proficient user of Sencha Architect.
