Some of the technical details are dated, but the author's approach to the subject is sound, and his clear writing style gives the reader excellent insights into what security means for computer users and network systems.

This book must be the best reference to security I have seen, but for a book that was published on 96 the content seems to be from the 80's. Hardly any of the software that ships with it can be used in a modern network, and web links are long gone which was a great disapoinment. So overall good book, a bit old stuff.

I found this book very enlightening because I had a lot of misguided notions that were in great need of dispelling. These notions were because of a lot of either incorrect information given by my computer professors in my college courses or told to me by others working in my field who also held these notions. Stephen Cobb's book on PC and LAN Security really opened my eyes. It taught me that some of what I had learned in school was just incorrect, what others told me was utter bunk, and finally it set the record straight. It was very well written and even a "non-technical" person would not have problems understanding the material and appreciating this book. Overall, I want to thank Stephen Cobb for writing this as well as the part he played in the NCSA Firewall buyer's guide (another great reference work). He brings much to the security field and I hope others appreciate his books like PC and LAN Security as much as I do.
