4.0 von 5 Sternen Among the best series of screenwriting books there are 18. April 2014

These Blue Books are easily the best screenwriting books I have ever read, and deserve 6/5 stars. However, I almost gave this 2 stars due to the shocking amount of spelling mistakes in the book. I don't want to turn off people from purchasing this book, though, hence the 4 star rating. Content alone is 5 stars, and if I am informed that these ridiculously easy to catch spelling mistakes have been fixed, I will gladly up my rating to 5 stars.

Act 2 was always my worst. The content was what I was looking for and needing. Already downloaded another blue book, too.

The - star was for all the typos.

This is an incredible book with do much great advice. It's crazy it's so cheap. Tons of ways to keep the middle of your story rolling.

Highlights were how to escalate conflict (emotional and physical) in an organic way that is character and story centric.

It's good. Get it.

One of the things I really appreciated about this Blue Book was that although it is written primarily by and for the screenwriters out there, the author frequently points out where the advice deviates for fiction/novels, etc. Film is (obviously) a strictly visual medium, so you can do different things with the image vs. the written word. the author touches on these differences as he goes through Act Two. Sometimes it is obvious, sometime a bit more obscure, but I appreciate the duality addressed.

As someone who has been mired in Act Two (fiction, not film), this book has a lot to recommend it. It clearly and concisely gets to the point of how Act Two can fail, what makes it succeed and bits that are useful to know. There are lots of examples (all film, but they demonstrate the points well, and they are mainstream enough so that you've probably seen them. The couple that I haven't seen were detailed to the point that I didn't need to have seen the film to see how his point was being illustrated).

While the points are concise, they are spread over the book, so use the highlighter so you can go back to them. All in all, one of the most useful get-out-of-the-muck writing guides I have come across. Of course, as with all guides, it comes down to finding the work that addresses the problem that you are struggling with at the point when you are ready for it / when you need it...so, if your Act Two is in need of attention, this may be the one for you.
