At the moment, it seems that hardly a day passes without fresh news of some glaring Internet security breach; online banks, of all things, seem to be particularly vulnerable at the moment. All of which will come as no great surprise to network security cum cryptography guru, Bruce Schnier. His latest book, Secrets and Lies, paints a very gloomy overview of the true state of network security. Schnier, founder of Counterpane Internet Security, has some harsh words to say about the state of network security, though, to be fair, his criticisms are directed far and wide; not one scapegoat, (not even Microsoft) is singled out for special attention. Depressingly, the words "fundamentally flawed" crop up time and time again in this absorbing book.

Secrets and Lies is a thorough backgrounder in all aspects of network security, an extremely wide remit that stretches from passwords to encryption, passing through authentication and attack trees along the way. The book is divided in to three broad categories, The Landscape, which covers attacks, adversaries and the need for security; Technologies, which discusses cryptography, authentication, network security, secure hardware and security tricks; and concludes with Strategies, which looks at vulnerabilities, risk assessment, security policies and the future of security. Mercifully there's a dim light at the end of this tunnel and Schnier ultimately remains upbeat about maintaining computer security and details a way forward in his conclusion.

Although working in a necessarily techie environment, Schnier's book is surprisingly jargon-free and easy to understand, even if you're not au fait with the inner workings of TCP/IP--it's common-sense, practical style makes a potentially dense and arcane subject accessible by just about anybody. It's also bang up to date, which makes for a pleasant change. Secrets and Lies is never less than thought-provoking and should be essential reading for every network administrator in the land. Whom can you trust? Try Bruce Schneier, whose rare gift for common sense makes his book Secrets and Lies: Digital Security in a Networked World both enlightening and practical. He's worked in cryptography and electronic security for years, and has reached the depressing conclusion that even the loveliest code and toughest hardware still will yield to attackers who exploit human weaknesses in the users. The book is neatly divided into three parts, covering the turn-of-the-century landscape of systems and threats, the technologies used to protect and intercept data, and strategies for proper implementation of security systems. Moving away from blind faith in prevention, Schneier advocates swift detection and response to an attack, while maintaining firewalls and other gateways to keep out the amateurs.

Newcomers to the world of Schneier will be surprised at how funny he can be, especially given a subject commonly perceived as quiet and dull. Whether he's analyzing the security issues of the rebels and the Death Star in Star Wars or poking fun at the giant software and e-commerce companies that consistently sacrifice security for sexier features, he's one of the few tech writers who can provoke laughter consistently. While moderately pessimistic on the future of systems vulnerability, he goes on to relieve the reader's tension by comparing our electronic world to the equally insecure paper world we've endured for centuries--a little smart-card fraud doesn't seem so bad after all. Not a technical manual, "Secrets and Lies" is intended to jog the reader's mind. It is well written and his style is almost personal as he tries to convey a very subtle point - usernames and passwords are old, it's time for a non-linear solution to information security. It doesn't give answers, but rather makes you think about your particular security situation (whatever that may be) from a sideways perspective. You should keep a notebook close while you read it to capture the ideas that spring to mind.

Hervorragender Überblick über die Vielfalt sicherheitsrelevanter Themen, sehr humorvoll geschrieben. Das Buch liefert zahlreiche Beispiele dafür, warum das Thema Security im Internet-Zeitalter immer größere Bedeutung erlangt, obwohl heutzutage scheinbar sichere Lösungen wie kryptografische Verfahren, Biometrie etc. zur Verfügung stehen. Besonders geeignet für IT-Verantwortliche, die ein Security-Gesamtkonzept für ein Unternehmen entwickeln müssen und einen möglichst vollständigen Überblick über das Thema und die Security-Lücken benötigen.

Bruce Schneier schafft es, leicht verständlich auch komplexere Themen zu erklären. Er geht in diesem Buch systematisch alle möglichen Arten von Sicherheitsproblemen durch und erklärt sowohl Angriffs- als auch Verteidigungsszenarien.

Das Buch ist nicht nur für sog. Sicherheitsexperten lesenswert sondern sollte auch von Beratern von Politikern gelesen werden. Am besten natürlich auch von den Politikern... :-)
