Amazon.de

John Sandford is back with his dapper, dangerous Minneapolis deputy police chief Lucas Davenport for a ninth "preyer" meeting. Fans of the series will be glad to hear that it's full of smart suspense and deduction as well as explosive action. Davenport and his fellow cops are still recovering from the deadly revenge scheme that maimed them in Sudden Prey, which seems to have ended the relationship between Lucas and his doctor lady friend. This accounts for the depression that dogs him as he is sent to investigate the killing of top banking executive Daniel Kresge in a hunting lodge north of Minneapolis. Any of Kresge's four fellow hunters--all employees at his Polaris Bank--could have shot him, and all had motives, as did his almost ex-wife. About halfway through the book we find out who the real killer is, just a few pages before Lucas does, and that villain is a masterful creation, an example of the banality of evil worthy of Hannah Arendt. This is where Sandford's beautifully honed skills at creating suspense really kick in: he keeps us fascinated as Davenport, revitalized by an affair with a jaunty colleague, tries to turn what we all know into hard evidence. --Dick Adler

5.0 von 5 Sternen WHAT A BOOK! Fantastic! 10. Dezember 2004
Format:Taschenbuch
I take back everything I said about Sandford in my review of "Devil's Code" - this guy knows how to write! I guess "Devil's Code" was a bump in the road for him and I was just unfortunate to start with that book. I'm glad I perservered with Sandford though because his other books so far have been great!

Since there are countless other reviews here, I won't rehash the plot. But I will say that Davenport is a great character with the potential to go on and on. The story is great and will make you seriously re-evaluate your work colleagues at promotion time! About 75% into the book, we find out who the killer is and then the rest of the book is spent with Davenport and colleagues trying to prove their case to a skeptical prosecutor. The killer meanwhile knows the net is closing in on them and they start doing whatever they can to save themselves. So the last 25% of the book is when the action definately heats up!

The ending is fantastic. I laughed my head off for ages. Just goes to show that Sandford has a great sense of humour! I will definately be reading the rest of the "Prey" books now! Highly recommended!

3.0 von 5 Sternen Not Great 7. Juni 2000
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This was not that great. I just held on till I found out who the killer was, then I had to force myself to finish it. Do not let this be your first book of the Prey Series. Trust me, the other books in the series are much, much better. I only suggest this book if you get bored and there is nothing else to read.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Too Much Language 23. Mai 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
Here is a book you will enjoy for a well composed story line, a competant "whodunit" cut in the Earle Stanley Gardner style. Not many of us can relate to millionaires, but the author shows well how unfulling and shallow their lives are. It's great fun to root against them. But the "good guys", the cops, have too much emotional "baggage" and seem incapable of communicating without the full range of obscene language and sexual innuendo, and it seriously detracts from an otherwise intelligent novel. I didn't particularly appreciate the killer's identity being revealed as soon as it was, but the author seemed to handle it well.
