"The New Secret Language of Symbols" takes a fresh look at the subject, satisfying today's appetite for interpreting the layers of meaning that exist below the surface of many works of art or architecture. The introduction looks at the cultural and psychological explanations of symbols, including the Jungian idea of the collective unconscious. The heart of the book is 'The World of Symbols', in which hundreds of symbols are presented and explained, theme by theme. We learn, for example, about the various forms of dragon in myth, the symbolism of sacred geometry, the attributes of different gods, angels and mythic heroes, and the array of meanings ascribed to human body parts. Collective subjects such as Fruits, Weapons and Insects are supplemented by mini-directory listings. The last major section, 'Symbols in Context', gives an overview of the most symbol-rich cultures, religions, esoteric groups or symbol systems, ranging from ancient Egypt and Hinduism to the Freemasons and the Tarot, with each topic structured around a multi-layered artefact or image that is analysed and decoded to highlight the important meanings embodied within it. David Fontana unpeels layers of profound historical and psychological significance, probes the ancient roots of a vast range of symbols, and in the process - like a gifted archaeologist who knows exactly where to look and how to interpret what he finds - he unearths boundless treasures.
Über den Autor
Professor David Fontana's many books, including The Secret Language of Symbols and The Secret Language of Dreams, have been translated into more than 25 languages. He holds a professorship at Liverpool John Moores University and is a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Cardiff University.

Beautiful New Release, Would Have Loved More Sophisticated Symbol Descriptions

This is a gorgeous new release of The Secret Language of Symbols. Some of the prior problems with images - those described by reviewers of earlier, smaller paperback versions - have been resolved. There are no images spread across the book crease or cut off, and overall it is a beautiful book. The strengths of the book - it's 'themed' organization and pictures - are in tact, and there is new material.
Basically, this book is organized in two ways. First, there are pages of symbols grouped by themes and sub-themes, such as Cosmos, broken into Heavenly Bodies, Sun and Moon, or Nature, broken into Land and Sea, Trees, Gardens, Mammals, etc. Each page has multiple symbols, with brief descriptions of what they represent in various cultures.
In addition, in each section there are 'Symbols in Context' pages, in which cultural and spiritual traditions are profiled, and the major symbols explained. For example, in the Heavenly Bodies section, there is a profile of Astrology, which includes the major signs of both Western and Chinese Astrology. There are similar pages for the Rosucrucians, the Chakras, and each of the major world religions.
My only issue with the book is that the symbol interpretations are really on the most basic level. This makes this a great general interest, gift, or coffee table book, but not great for true research. I guess it's a trade off - to provide more detailed and nuanced descriptions, the publisher would probably have to reduce the number of symbols covered, or cover fewer symbols.
So as long as you know what you are getting, this is a good, and beautiful, book.

I was hoping for a book of symbols and their meanings - drawing of symbol: meaning; sorta like a symbol dictionary. That's not what this book is. Disappointed. Haven't looked at it since. Will probably donate it to library

I've studied both semiotics and David Fontana for years ... this is a great resource of both. I have in my library probably fifteen or so catalogs of symbols, this one is a remarkable overview with a lot of 'new' material introduced in it. His method of creating brief compilations is laudable and accessible and it is well worth the cost - not only for the illustrations.
