When Grey Bailey’s parents are suddenly swept away in a flash flood, making her an instant orphan, she is sent halfway across the country to live with relatives in a town called Bailey’s Chase.

Fortunately, her new family includes a girl just her age, Sparky. It doesn't take the ten-year-old cousins long to become friends, even though they find each other a bit strange.

But strange doesn't begin to explain the magical and mysterious events that happen from the moment the girls meet, nothing making sense until they meet a Gypsy woman.

She warns them to only use their power for good, swears them to secrecy, and warns them of evil forces that will be their enemies. Armed with only a charm to protect them, they settle into a life of adventure, mystery, and danger in the small Midwestern town.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Marlis Day loved reading books about adventurous kids when she was a child. Like Sparky and Grey Bailey, she enjoyed riding her bike around looking for a mystery to solve. She imagined having dangerous and magical adventures like the two girl heroines in the town of Bailey s Chase. When she was an adult, she became a teacher and read exciting books to all of her students. She wrote three mysteries for adults. This is her first book for middle-age kids. She hopes they will delight in it. The author lives with her husband in the rolling hills of southern Indiana where she is working on the next book about Sparky and Grey Bailey. She loves to visit schools and read to kids.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A little bit of everything! 5. Juli 2011

The Secret of Bailey's Chase has magic and mystery, fun and history, great characters and fascinating settings, excitement and good values. Young readers will relate to cousins Grey and Sparky and enjoy sharing the girls' adventures. Author Marlis Day skillfully weaves in some Indiana history, but this book isn't just for Hoosiers! The Secret of Bailey's Chase would make a great read-aloud book, but middle grade kids will also like reading it themselves.

Are you looking for a book to read to your 8 year old or for your 10 to 11 year old to read for himself or herself? A novel with an exciting tale, full of adventures and mystery. One that encourages curiosity, a sense of wonder, and, yes, also a sense of empowerment for your young sleuth? If so, Marlis Day's Bailey's Chase series is just right for you and your child. Back to Bailey's Chase is the second in the series and, as with The Secret of Bailey's Chase, it is organized in such a way as to hold an early reader's attention. Each chapter is a bite-size mini-tale, complete on its own, but which also leads the reader forward through the larger story.

Back to Bailey's Chase manages to bring just the right balance of a challenging, thrilling, magical, and compelling mystery without immersing your young reader in an egregious display of blood and guts or excessive psychological trauma. This is a book you can enjoy together with your child or your child can enjoy on his or her own as an early reader.

I highly recommend Back to Bailey's Chase and the Bailey's Chase series.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Marlis Day's jewel of a book could be used in any classroom to entice young minds 18. März 2009

Marlis Day is a teacher who loves kids. She has published three mysteries for adults, but her love of reading children's stories and remembering her own childhood drove her to write her first book for middle-age kids. Thus the Sparky and Grey Bailey series was born. She is presently working on her next adventure featuring the Bailey cousins.

Bailey's Chase was named for Granny Bailey, an old woman with blue eyes which changed colors and hair that seemed to throw off sparks. Everyone loved Granny Bailey, whose wisdom could cure small ills; whose hospitality made everyone feel welcome at her door; and whose love of animals extended to her being able to communicate with them. Granny was beloved by all, and when she died her gifts didn't surface again until a tragedy brought her two great-great-great-granddaughters together:

"'Hi, I'm Sparky,' the girl said, holding out her hand and staring curiously at Grey's face.

'Do you know that your hair's on FIRE?' Grey asked while shaking hands.

Nobody else seemed to notice anything out of the ordinary. She thought she must be tired and seeing things. Hallucinating, that's what people called it. Grey had read about people hallucinating when they got tired, but she had never done it. She shook her head and blinked, making sure she was awake.

'My hair's not on fire,' the girl said with a giggle, running a hand through her hair just to prove it. Grey continued to stare, amazed at the sight. The girl suddenly leaned forward, stared directly into Grey's eyes, and said, 'Your eyes are funny though. They just changed colors!'"

With this premise, the stage is set for adventures that would make Nancy Drew jealous. The two cousins discover their gifts and how they relate to good and evil. Marlis Day creates a building block of character, action, and a wonderful plot to create an adventure the reader will never forget. Her skill is apparent throughout the book, as well as her love of children. Sparky and Grey are great role models for middle-school children, and Marlis Day's jewel of a book could be used in any classroom to entice young minds.
