A Tidy Little Hand Guide

I have found this book to be quite handy. I am an artist and I make contemporary paintings inspired by traditional tartans. This book is a tidy little reference for quick visuals when someone asks if I am familiar with a particular clan's tartan. The book's strength is its photographs of the tartans. The book's weakness: the narratives adjoining the visuals which assume that the reader has some knowledge of Scottish history and are written very much in the Scottish vernacular. I do very much appreciate this book regardless, and it has driven me to study the topic of tartans, and clan violence further.

This is a historic source of excellent information about the Scottish clans and the tartans, and how much of the warfare and groups came into play over the centuries. I had always thought that there were only a few plaid tartans, like the yellow MacLeod of Lewis, the green Maclean, and the red Stewart, along with the Dress Stewart, the Hunting Stewart and the red-and-green Stewart of Atholl. When I journeyed through Scotland, I was awakened to the different clans, and the war and struggles with England by the different clans, and all the secret alliances and intrigue that came into play. Any traveler, writer, or artist will find this little book invaluable in understanding the isles of Orkney, Skye and Mull, and other important parts of Scotland such as Inverness, Oban, Glasgow, Loch Ness and Edinburgh. The narratives are "wee-bit" tough to understand without an accompanying primer for clarification.
