Using this book, coaches at every level of experience can learn how to apply winning tactics and teaching methods to help their own high school and college players perform better and enjoy the sport more. "Science of Coaching Volleyball" aims to make complex sport science principles easy to understand and adapt to everyday coaching situations. The editor, Carl McGown has participated in every aspect of volleyball - as a player at all levels and as a coach. For this book, he enlists the expertise of contributors, who are not only leaders in their respective fields but who have successfully applied the sport sciences to their work with volleyball teams. Providing practical information for improving coaching skills based on knowledge from motor learning, sport psychology, biomechanics, exercise physiology, sports medicine and nutrition, each chapter explains why a particular sport science is important and provides specific applications to volleyball training and technique. The specific techniques should enable coaches to: motivate players; teach proper positioning for basic volleyball techniques, including blocking, spiking, serving and defense; integrate the latest training concepts into practices and drills; teach player positioning skills for improved speed and accuracy; offer feedback to players; teach new skills effectively; help prevent and treat injuries; and help players develop better eating habits for improved performance.

This is a book that I looked forward to reading. After many years of trying, I finally got the jist of it.

Carl McGown is a very knowledgable coach. He will coach cirles around a lot of people. The information in the book however is a little too academic for the beginning coach, or even the intermediate coach. Lots of great ideas and information here, but it is really hard to make sense of it.

This book isn't for everybody. Least of all the beginner to the game.

Carl McGowen has compiled one of the best books written about the sport. The subject covered are wide ranging and not often covered in other how-to books. I recommend it to any coach.
