Synopsis
The Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim, in Germany, is the only museum worldwide that is exclusively devoted to jewellery. The collection of the museum contains thousands of historical and contemporary items of jewellery: original objects of adornment from six millenia, dating from prehistoric times to the present. The ornamentation of the body and clothes, whether with rough and simple materials or valuable substances such as gold, silver, precious stones and pearls since earliest times - and irrespective of period or rank - has demostrated man's desire to express his or her very own personality in some special and highly individual manner. Jewellery provides a way to distinguish oneself within a group or apart from it and thus also partake in the magic that in the full sense of the word - both bewitching and enchanting - is the precondition, occasion, function and final aim of self-adornment. The major focus of the museum's collection is on jewellery from Greek and Etruscan-Roman antiquity, the Renaissance and the Baroque as wellas Art Nouveau and Art Deco, together with a unique range of contemporary designer jewellery since 1960. Of particular importance are the large holdings of rings from ancient times to the present day.
