5.0 von 5 Sternen A great guide to the less known roads 27. April 2012

I am so glad I received this book as a gift a few years ago. I have taken about 85% of the drives described and I never would have discovered many of these drives and I certainly would not have enjoyed them so much without this book. I give this book as a gift to friends now all the time. It is a great book and has all the appropriate details to appreciate sites and views along the way. Don't live in or near New Mexico or travel through New Mexico without this book if you like scenery and touring and also an occasional dirt road virtually to yourself.

I used this excellent guide book on several long drives in New Mexico in June 2011. The paperback version is excellent; I have seen, but do not recommend the Kindle version, because the maps were not as useful in that format -- pretty good on the Kindle itself, but hard to use on the iPhone app which I greatly preferred.

Formats aside, the content of this book is excellent. Parent has written 40 or so books on travel, I have seen, used and enjoyed the following:

Scenic Driving Texas, 3rdHiking Big Bend National Park, 2nd (Regional Hiking Series)

Scenic Driving North Carolina, 2nd (Scenic Routes & Byways)

Each was as well done and useful as Scenic Driving New Mexico, 3rd.

The High Road: Santa Fe to Taos is a classic drive for any visitor to either Taos or Santa Fe. It is easy to compare the various descriptions of the drive, and I found Parent's as good as any and better than some. For example, and this summary appears for each drive, several of which I also took:

General description: A 70 mile scenic back road from Santa Fe to Taos that passes through old Spanich villages and the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Special attractions: Weavers in Chimayo, historic churches in Chimayo, Las Trampas and Ranchos de Taos, Indian pueblos, Carson National Forest, Pecos Wilderness, Santa Fe, Taos, views, hiking, camping.

Location: North central New Mexico. The drive starts at the junction of NM 503 about 15 miles north of Santa Fe on US 84/285. [Parent is very wise to warn that "local police use it as a revenue raiser, so watch your speed." I got a ticket for 42 mph on a short section just after leaving the 65 mph limit on 84/285.]

Drive route numbers: NM 503, CR98, NM 76, NM 75, NM 518

Travel season: Year-round. The highway can be snowy and icyu in winter. Summer and fall are the most pleasant times. [The route was excellent in early June and in early August, 2011.]

Camping: Campgrounds are at Santa Cruz Lake in the Carson National Forest and in the mountains on side roads above Las Trampas and Penasco and a few miles east of the scenic drive along NM 518 on the highway to Mora.

Service: All services are available in Santa Fe and Taos and nearby Espanola. Limited restaurants and gas are in Truchas, Penasco and Chimayo. Very limited lodging in Chimayo and Truchas.

Nearby attractions: Bandelier National Monument, Santa Fe National Forest, Santa Fe and Sipapu ski areas, Rio Grande Gorge.

For more information: Taos Chamber of Commerce, Santa Fe Convention and Vistors Burea, Carson National Forest. See Appendix for addresses, phone numbers, and websites.

I used Parent for other drives as well:

Valle Grande: White Rock to Jemez Pueblo -- Bandelier and Valles Caldera

Ghost Ranch: Aabiquiu to Tierra Amarilla

The Enchanted Circle: Taos -- Red River Loop

Sitting Bull Falls and the Ridge Road -- Sitting Bull Falls to Guadalupe Ridge

His information was unfailingly accurate and helpful

One suggestion for future editions; consider adding references at the general descriptions to other drives that connect, or are close to, the current drive. For a simple example, refer in the Enchanted Circle drive to the High Road drive, with page or drive numbers. That is an obvious example, but in some parts of the state, the connections are not that obvious.

In any event, this is a marvelous guide for anyone who is interested in driving in one of the most beautiful and interesting states in the Union.

I have a busy family, but we still try to make some roadtrip time. Nice to be able to quickly look up places rather than hunting up maps and routes.

I specifically purchased this book for a trip to New Mexico. Three friends and I planned a trip to Bosque del Apache Nat. Wildlife
Refuge to photograph the sandhill cranes and snow geese, but wanted to fill the afternoons with something different. This book
really help us figure out what to see and how to get there. Because of this book we took a different path home instead of staying
on I-25 and found some wonderful things to photograph. Good for those who like to stray off the beaten path.
