Kurzbeschreibung

Fly toward pilot certification with these real-world scenario exercises

Although PC-based flight simulations have been available for 30 years, many pilots, instructors, and flight schools don't understand how best to use these tools in real-world flight training and pilot proficiency programs. This invaluable reference bridges the gap between simulation tools and real-world situations by presenting hands-on, scenario-based exercises and training tips for the private pilot certificate and instrument rating. As the first of its kind based on FAA-Industry Training Standards (FITS), this book steers its focus on a scenario-based curriculum that emphasizes real-world situations.

Experienced pilot and author Bruce Williams ultimately aims to engage the pilot, reinforce the "realistic" selling point of PC-based flight simulations, while also complementing the FAA-approved FITS syllabi.
* Serves as essential reading for pilots who want to make effective use of simulation in their training while expanding their skill level and enjoyment of flying
* Covers private pilot real-world scenarios and instrument rating scenarios
* Includes a guide to recommended websites and other resources
* Features helpful charts as well as a glossary

You'll take off towards pilot certification with this invaluable book by your side.

You're also going to have a lot of fun.

Scenario-Based Training is an interactive, guided tour through the process of learning to think like a pilot.

With this book, you can
* Learn from the FAA/Industry Training Standards (FITS) approach to flight training
* Explore official pilot handbooks and guides from top aviation training and safety experts
* Perfect fundamental flying skills with real-world scenarios
* Experience computer equipment and accessories that enhance PC-based flight simulations
* Find out how to install, set up, and optimize X-Plane and FSX
* Gain experience dealing with a wide variety of variables, including weather, terrain, airport environments, and equipment failures
* Practice whenever you like

Attention flight instructors and virtual aviators

Scenario-Based Training helps instructors include simulation in training programs, and it adds a new dimension to virtual flying for simulation enthusiasts.

Scenarios will not work. Don't buy 18. Januar 2012
Von GTD125 - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
As it says in the title, this book is about scenario-based training. Except, the scenarios don't work in X-Plane 10! (And, from what I'm reading, possibly even the latest versions of X-Plane 9!)

After searching around on Google, I found a website with a post by the author explaining that the he wrote the book not understanding that the scenarios wouldn't work.

I wish I'd known this before I bought!

The author, in his post, somewhat lamely suggests that readers recreate the scenarios on their own. If I had some experience with X-Plane, maybe this would be practical. But, I'm having enough difficulty just learning how to use X-Plane (I just got it), and the descriptions of the scenarios contained in the book are minimal, making them difficult to recreate.

What's really frustrating for me is that not only did I waste $22 on this book, but I also wasted a bunch of time trying to figure out why my copy of X-Plane kept crashing, even re-installing the game before I realized it was the scenarios. I think it's ridiculous that the author knows the scenarios don't work in X-Plane 10, but there is nothing posted here or at the publishers website--from where you download the game crashing scenarios.

If you are using Flight Simulator X, then maybe this is a book worth buying, but if you're an X-Plane user, save your money.

Now I just have to figure out if I can get my $22 back.

The Bible for PC Flight Sim. 1. April 2012
Von TheTonester - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Von Amazon bestätigter Kauf
Kudos to Bruce Williams for an excellent compilation! This is by far the best, most thorough written authority on today's home PC flight simulators, skillfully incorporating two of the best most popular sims (X-Plane and Microsoft FS) on two different platforms (Mac & PC). Mr. Williams masterfully covers everything you need to know --in user-friendly, informative chapters-- about training in the FAA scenario-based method using your PC.

I've been flying PC sims since the original Bruce Artwick MS Flight Simulator in the early 80's, all the way through Fly! and X-Plane 10 today. This is the best book on the subject by far, and you can tell lots of work has gone into it. It's thinly reminiscent of some of the "let's pretend..." scenario books that were released in the early days of MS FS, except those were more in the realm of game guides.

This book, though, is serious stuff. You can tell Mr. Williams and team has put lots of tedious work into this one. If you're looking for a How-To on operating the sims themselves, this isn't really it; this guide lets you learn technique from the FAA publications that real-world pilots do...but then has a true-to-life flying lesson awaiting you with each chapter. You'll be taught. You'll be briefed. You'll be held to FAA standard. The author's team has also filled the book chock with websites, notes and tips on how to find the best, most current online resources for your training. They've even created a partner site where you can download everything you need to make this program work best-- from charts to free FAA guide downloads and more.

The only minor "cons" to this book: Mr. Williams' partner site for this book includes downloadable scenario files for your sim. For X-Plane, these only work up to "X-Plane 9"-- but X-Plane 10 is now the newest release. So if you're like me who has the most current XP version, you're stuck to reading the book only and either not using his scenarios or setting them up in X-Plane 10 yourself. Hopefully the team will create scenario files for XP10 soon. Another improvement that could be made is that too many times in the book there is repeated reference to the partner site or a particular download or app. They probably could have saved lots of paper by consolidating these references into an iconic sidebar a la some of the "Dummies" books.

All in all, though, a great buy if you're serious about learning to fly, increasing proficiency, or enjoying your PC sim the way real pilots enjoy their planes.

Great for student and existing pilots! 13. Februar 2012
Von Jacob Hughes - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I am a private pilot and have been an avid flight simulation user for years. I found this book to be a very valuable asset in my flying toolbox. Good pilots are always learning, but it is easy to fall into a rut or just need a little extra structure to your practice and training. Bruce's book allows me to exercise the skills I learned when getting my PPL in direct alignment with FAA recommended training principles. With references to multiple FAA publications as recommended readings, exercises that build on each other, and real world scenarios it has proven to be a fantastic tool to strengthen and reiterate the skills and knowledge needed to be a competent, safe, and confident pilot (or simPilot). All of this at home, reducing both my cost for instructor time (because I'm more competent at reviews/etc) and aircraft time! Highly recommended.
