Not just for cops! Social workers and houseparents, average folks will benefit 6. Oktober 2012
Von Becky Blanton - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Before I was a journalist, I was a police officer. I graduated from a police academy and had a 4.0 in criminal justice for almost two years. This book is fantastic for cops and security guards, but more so for anyone who wants to learn about self-protection. ANY good martial artist will tell you the best way to win a fight is to walk away from it. Sometimes you don't get that option. This is where this book comes in -- Rory and Lawrence tell you HOW to recognize the signs (breathing rates, talking/not talking, posture, etc.) that signal potential violence.

If you're not familiar with the concept of the "victim interview," they do an excellent job describing what that is and how to avoid passing the interview! Essentially bad guys will test potential victims (mugging, rape, assault etc) by testing (interviewing) them first. They may ask you for change, or the time. They may walk too close and see if you stop and confront them... Just as sharks will "bump" a swimmer to determine if they can attack with success, human sharks will do the same, subtly evaluating or "interviewing" you to see if you'll fight back, or lay down and give up. DISCLAIMER: I interviewed Lawrence about this very issue several years ago and that's how I know him. He sent me this book to review since that's what I do now, (in addition to being a ghostwriter).

What makes this such a "hard to put down," book is that both Rory and Lawrence obviously draw on their history of personal encounters and experience with violence and responses to it. I LOVE the case studies, the "actual event" descriptions and the way they use actual incidents to explain the concepts they're teaching. Just a fun read even if you don't do anything with it. You'll learn stuff just by reading.

They point out that a lot of violence is caused by, or prevented by "presence" (the art of "skillfully doing nothing") and attitude, and then go into how to develop that.

Practical, practical, practical. They talk openly about the consequences of violence (lawsuits, bodily harm) and give very matter-of-fact things to consider BEFORE escalating a situation.

Who should buy this book?

College students
Women
Cops
Social Workers
ANYONE with a concealed carry permit who does in fact, carry
House parents
Teachers
Lawyers and judges and anyone in a bail bonds office
Hospital and psychiatric workers
Anyone who works with the homeless
Anyone who works with addicts
Anyone who works in security
Anyone who works in a bar or restaurant
Anyone who works in a hotel or other public place where people get drunk and stupid

Seriously. The BEST book I've ever read on this topic. These guys put it all into one book, practical, easy-to-read, no BS insights, suggestions and information about how to protect yourself against the nutjobs, criminals and angry people in this world.

A Five Star Book from a Five Star Author 27. September 2012
Von Jason Cook - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This book is simply incredible. Rory Miller takes his years of experience and training, combines it with excellent training tips and stories that will make you laugh and other times bring you to the edge of tears.

Teaching proper threat escalation is a vitally important part of martial arts and self defense, one that is too often passed over. Rory Miller should be considered a must read author for anyone who deals with violence in any situation, being a martial artist, a police officer, or a club bouncer. This book will save your life, and your life savings if you have to defend yourself in the courtroom. Stop reading this review and buy this book, now!

Great Primer on Pre-Assaultive Behaviors and How to Avoid Violent Confrontations 27. Juni 2014
Von D. G. Bolgiano - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
First of all, I may have given the book a 5-star rating but for some editing errors that became distracting to this reader. There should be the ability to give a 4.5 star rating, as this book would have landed there. With that said, I highly recommend the book for both novices (E.g., folks who just obtained their CCW or those just wanting to be a safer citizen) and professionals (police officers and even military members operating in an uncertain battle space).
The authors neatly set out the different types of violence - social and predatory - and explain how to better identify them, avoid them and, if necessary, deal with them. Having taught and operated in these realms, I appreciate their ability to communicate these concepts to the "good guys" out here … a definite read for those who have to professionally deal with the violent side of our culture. I also appreciate the lack of false bravado that many authors bring to the discussion.

Making the world a better place 6. September 2013
Von Jeffrey K. Mann - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
Another great book by two outstanding authors. Rory Miller ("Meditations on Violence") and Lawrence A. Kane ("Little Black Book of Violence") bring together their combined expertise in dealing with the ugly realities of violence into another book that has the potential to make the world a better place. That may sound like a grandiose claim, but if a few people read this and learn how to avoid/diffuse/walk away from/survive a violent encounter, well, there will be some police officers, EMT's, coroners, spouses, and children whose days won't be ruined by needless bloodshed. The only ones who stand to lose from the publication of this book are the lawyers who line their pockets through representing folks caught in violent encounters.

The book begins with about 50 pages of material that will be familiar to those who have read earlier works by Miller and Kane. This is an abbreviated introduction to different types of violence, situational awareness, and the "legal ramifications of violence." For a fuller treatment of this material, one should read the works by the authors cited above. And for those who have already read them, it's a good reminder of some important principles. As the book makes clear regarding physical self-defense, it's not good enough to learn something once and think you've got it down. So, while this section isn't new, it's time well spent reviewing it.

The remainder of the book takes the reader through their 6 levels of responses to potential or actual violence: presence, voice, touch, empty-hand restraint, less-lethal force, lethal force. Each level is explored thoroughly, with plenty of real-world examples, to offer a realistic assessment of what can (should?) be done in different situations to keep oneself as safe as possible. There are certainly no easy formulas provided, as the dangers and shortcomings of different tactics and approaches are discussed clearly and frankly. In the end, the authors "hope that if you have taken one thing away from this book, it is that conflict and violence are a very broad range of human behavior. The things that you may have to defend yourself against range from intimidation to murder and your appropriate defenses also must range from doing nothing skillfully to possibly taking a life" (295).

In the end, this is another book that will lead quite a few people away from romantic notions of violence, with hands, feet, knives, or guns. And I believe it will help some folks decide that, given the choice, violence is an ugly business left alone.

My criticisms (as any good review should have) are minor. At times I felt that so much was being put into the book - as the authors wanted to share their valuable insights - that I lost sight of what the particular section was about. This material was valuable, but sometimes muddled the presentation. Also, a little more proofreading would have helped. (Gentlemen, next time you write a book, I'm happy to volunteer my services.)

For folks whose lives involve or may involve violence, the time spent reading this book is of tremendous value.

Excellent 2. Januar 2014
Von harold travis - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I highly recommend this book, I Have long thought that those of us who have been certified to teach have to face the fact that most people have no realistic understanding of the real cost and dangers of violence. The book really enforces the fact that if at all possible the wisest choice is to avoid violence, because once a situation becomes violent you can't foresee what level it can escalate to. The possible physical ,mental and legal ramifications all point to 1 absolutely true fact violence should only be the choice when there is no other choice.
