Richard Bedard was a journalist in his mid-40s, living abroad, when he was diagnosed with patellofemoral pain syndrome, or chondromalacia patella. If you suffer from chondromalacia patella, patellofemoral syndrome, runner's knee, knee pain that you have been told you have to live with and there's nothing you can do, etc., this book is a MUST read. Unlike many other dry knee books that are based on the standard mantra of 'strengthen the muscles around the knees' but NOT strengthen the knee joint, this book provides a completely different perspective. The author provides the research-based perspective on how and why knee joints, including cartilage injuries, can and do heal. He emphasizes the importance of a joints-focused rather than a muscle-focused healing program.

The author's recounts his own story of how he healed his 'incurable' chondromalacia, how he went against the doctors who told him there is no hope, and did his own research to develop his own program to heal his knees. This is not a book that prescribes a step-by-step prescription of how to heal your knees, but rather general principles of how to heal your knees.

His inspiring story is recounted in enjoyable prose and provides a tremendous amount of fact-based hope.

I bought this book after struggling with chondromalacia for 6 months in the hope that it might provide some solutions. The book is mostly about the personal struggle of the author and less about a "how to" repair ones knees. In that sense it's quite disappointing. It did give some pointers on the philosophy of how he went about it - for eg, continuous light exercise for the joints with little or no load. Another takeaway is the complete change in philosophy of a highly fit person - not to plough through a tough workout as one is used to but a very light workout that won't push you or burn much calories. Finally, I am grateful for his reference to Doug Kelsey whose book I also bought which contains the exercises and techniques I was looking for. I would highly recommend that book over this one though its not available on Amazon.

If you have chondromalacia, this book is a must. First of all, it is a story of hope about a situation that most people are told is chronic. You will not believe (or maybe you will) how much severe knee pain the author endured and how unavoidable the pain eventually became. It is heart wrenching... but the fact that he ultimately overcame it, and ON HIS OWN, is
absolutely awesome. He did it through exhaustive research, very careful monitoring and journaling about his knees, and careful use of the joints over a long period of time. The best thing I got from it is hope for healing my knees -- despite doctors telling me that was not possible.

In addition, the book is full of helpful information. From what I can gather, most doctors and physical therapists do not dispense this same valuable information to their patients for whatever reason. Do they not know cartilage can heal? Do they not want to break with what they were taught in school? I have no idea what the answer is. Luckily, the book sites many studies that show cartilage CAN and DOES improve. Now that's truly awesome news!!!

I don't have a Kindle, but I downloaded Kindle for my computer for free from Amazon. Totally easy.

One more perk-- his writing is really enjoyable to read. If you have runner's knee or chondromalacia, or patellofemoral syndrome, do not hesitate to buy this book.

If you have been diagnosed with Runner's Knee, Jumper's Knee and/or Patella Femoral Syndrome, and are unable to heal in 3 months or less, this book is a must read. After running 3 marathons in one year my knees just ached all the time, even when I rode my bike. After going to three different Ortho Docs, and three different Physical Therapists, I finally feel like I'm on the path to a long term solution. The key insights include: (1) cartilage can heal, (2) muscles should be strengthened (but only a small part of solution, at most), (3) you MUST figure out ways to use your knees without inflaming or hurting them, and carefully build them up over 6 months to 2 years - that is the ONLY long term solution. I also really appreciate how thoughtfully he explains the process of figuring out how to get his knees better. You WILL have dozens of major setbacks, but you CAN do it if you adopt a careful and disciplined plan to protect, heal and strengthen your knees over 6 months to 2 years. Be patient, and you can do it. There is no miracle drug or surgery, and the lack of nerve endings in our knees mean we don't even know that we are harming them until a few days later. I read this book in a day, and just wish I'd read it a year ago.
