A boy, his sister, and her psychopathic roommate.

When Katherine Langley’s roommate, Emma, disappears from a house party on New Year’s Day, the only evidence left is a single set of footprints in the snow leading down to a deserted dock.

Flashback sixteen months to Katherine’s first day at the University of Virginia when life is sweet. She is finally free from the drama of her parents’ dysfunctional marriage and ready to focus on studying to become a nurse. Her brother, Ben, belongs to the hottest fraternity on campus, and her new roommate, Emma, is beautiful and charming, a party girl whose answer for a hangover is happy hour. She is also a psychopath. When Katherine’s obsessive-compulsive overprotective brother succumbs to Emma’s charms and falls dangerously off-track, Katherine must save Ben from himself.

From the University of Virginia campus to a cozy cottage on Carter’s Creek, Saving Ben is a haunting tale of love and loyalty, anger management, substance abuse, and betrayal.

“This beautifully designed book might have come from any of the biggest publishing houses and sit shoulder to shoulder with some of the best LOOKING books to be released this year . . .The writing is exceptional and the story compelling with an emotional resonance that demonstrates a maturity to the writing that makes Ashley Farley an author to watch.”— Judge, Writer’s Digest 21st Annual Self-Published Book Awards

4.0 von 5 Sternen Hauntingly Beautiful!! Highly reccomended! 28. Februar 2013
Von Angela McLaurin - Veröffentlicht auf
What first drew me to this book was the beautiful cover! A gorgeous cover always peaks my interest. I also learned that Ashley is from South Carolina which was another bonus for me. Going in, I knew there was no way that I wouldn't love this story!

This truly was a haunting tale of friendship and loyalty and all of the things that can go wrong in between. I loved the relationship between Katherine and Ben! Reading about a brother and sister being so incredibly close was refreshing and sweet. Their relationship was strong until Katherine's roommate in college, Emma, entered the picture. Ashley did a phenomenal job of creating the character of Emma. She was sweet, obsessive, scary, and revengeful all wrapped up in a pretty package. I went in thinking this would be another college love story, but I couldn't have been more wrong.

The story starts out with a mystery of a disappearance on New Year's Day and then backtracks to fill us in on the story that brought us to that point. There were relationships explored between brothers and sisters, roommates, childhood friends, and parents and their children. The book ended up turning me into an emotional wreck and I loved every twist and turn of the plot. From the incredibly complex characters she created to the surprising plot, Ashley Farley has written a haunting tale you won't soon forget!

I am anxious to see what Ashley has in store for readers next and she has taken an official place on my "authors to watch" list. Also, you must go and check out her website. It's a wonderful resource for readers and writers alike and I'm following it closely for new information daily!

3.0 von 5 Sternen No Happily ever after 19. November 2013

Saving Ben is a contemporary, suspense, thriller storyline written in the New Adult genre.

I am not sure where to begin with this review. The premise focuses on brother and sister-Ben and Katherine Langley-and the struggles of college life, friendship, first love, obsession, betrayal, drug abuse, anorexia, death, murder and suicide. Yep, pretty much the average day for every college freshman AND the recipe for a fun and heartfelt romance.

The further the storyline developed the more I was disheartened. I knew from the start that Katherine's new college roommate was not what she appeared to be. The words 'too good to be true' only hint at the potential for a psycopathic mind fueled by drugs, obsession, jealousy and rage. Students entering into first year studies beware of beautiful roommates with a personality disorder and a family history of lies, deceit and trouble with the law.

I wanted to like this storyline but there was no possibility for a happily ever after after reading the first few chapters. As the build up of the storyline grew, so too, did my anxiety over the obvious problems of Katherine's roommate. And to complicate matters, Katherine had her suspicious which came to fruition yet she continued to enable the behavior-I am thinking most people in her situation would have reported the problem immediately and demanded to move, but NO, she actually signed up for another year with the crazy lady. Saving Ben is not only the title, but Katherine's journey throughout the story as she attempts to save her brother as his life spirals out of control under the guise of love and obsession.

Saving Ben is not a storyline for anyone looking for a HEA. There is no HEA; there is heartbreaking sorrow, loss, pain and guilt-but a guilt that could have been avoided from the very start.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Frightening and realistic with terrific characters 23. Februar 2013
Von Christina (Ensconced in Lit) - Veröffentlicht auf
I was asked by the author to read and review this book. After a lot of thought, this book is between 3.5 and 4 stars, but much closer to 4 stars.

Saving Ben by Ashley Farely is a new adult book, taking place during college years, a time in which I have a special place in my heart. The book stars Katherine, who seems to have it all-- a wealthy lifestyle and a brother who dotes on her. But her parents have their own issues and have been distant, and she is excited to get out of her brother's protective eye. She joins him at UVA as a freshman, and meets her gorgeous and seemingly perfect roommate, Emma, who slowly shows her true colors the longer she is around. To make matters worse, she has Ben under her spell, and things slowly fall apart. Then Emma goes missing.

The first half of this book was completely riveting. I loved the setup of the book, which while not the most new idea (it reminds me of Poison Ivy and a couple of other movies where the crazy girl wants to take over another girl's life), the setting, atmosphere, and strong characterization of Katherine, her brother, and their friends, made it unique in its own way. The second half was less strong, but had some great twists, and I think it ended plot wise the only way it could.

My main issue with this book is that the second half seemed a lot more telling instead of showing, which was more dramatically seen for me, since the first half did not have this issue. Because of this, a particular relationship that occurs did not have the same impact that it probably should have.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. I raced through this book from cover to cover, and it was a very strong first novel. I think that Farley will just get better and better.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Very Impressed With Ashley Farley's First Novel! 23. Februar 2013

As soon as I put Saving Ben down, I looked forward to the next minute I could pick it up and start reading again. The engaging characters and well described settings pulled me into the novel. I almost felt like I was a part of Kitty and Ben's family. I especially enjoyed the development of Kitty's relationship with her mother. A successful first novel for Ashley Farley!
