On its initial publication in Czech in 1942, "Saturnin" was a best-seller, its gentle satire offering an unexpected - if temporary - reprieve from the grim reality of the German occupation. In the years since, the novel has been hailed as a classic of Czech literature, and this translation makes it available to English-language readers for the first time-which is entirely appropriate, for author Zdenek Jirotka clearly modeled his light comedy on the English masters Jerome K. Jerome and P. G. Wodehouse. The novel's main character, Saturnin, a 'gentleman's gentleman' who obviously owes a debt to Wodehouse's beloved Jeeves, wages a constant battle to protect his master from romantic disaster and intrusive relatives, such as Aunt Catherine, the 'Prancing Dictionary of Slavic Proverbs'. Enlivened with new, full-color illustrations by Czech graphic artist Adolph Born, "Saturnin" will warm the heart of any fan of literary comedy.

On to the review, per se....

I know just enough Czech to be stuck in the middle.

A friend gave me the original and I only vaguely understood something about doughnuts.

But I know enough Czech to appreciate the humor which seems to burst from every word.

It's a delightful language for poetry, as rhyme-able as Italian but always laughing at itself.

That said, it goes without saying that translation is where poetry lost is, a la Robert Frost.

Still, this is charming in the most gracious escapist vein.

A delightful comedy of manners for the privileged.

It recalls a fictitious bygone age.

Yet remains modern and surprising.

What do you have to lose?

Like Agatha Christie

without the murder.

Very amusing read 2. November 2009

I bought this book after it was recommended for me by a friend from the Czech Republic. The book caught my attention quite easily and held it all the way through. It is a highly entertaining read with a great deal of humour brought about through pranks, capers, and adventures. The title character Saturnin is a butler with both and ingenious and insidious personality. His pranks are more than just for his amusement; they serve to prove a point or to help his employer in some manner. All deeds are carried out with the manners expected of a high class butler, adding to the humour. This novel is comical as well as enthralling, intelligent and an extremely enjoyable read. I highly recommend it.
