Amazon.co.uk

One might expect The Satanic Bible at least to offer a few prancing demons or a virgin sacrifice, but if you're looking for a tour of the house of horrors, this is the wrong book. Far from a manual for conquering the realms of earth, air, fire and water, The Satanic Bible is Anton LaVey's manifesto of a new religion separate from the "traditional" Judeo-Christian definitions of Satanism. While LaVey rails against the deceit of the Christian church and white magicians, he busily weaves his own deceptions.

The Satanic Bible claims the heritage of a horde of evil deities--Bile', Dagon, Moloch, and Yao Tzin to name a few--but these ancient gods have no coherent connection between each other or to Satanism, except that all have been categorised by Christianity as "evil". Calling on these ancient names like a magician shouting, "Abracadabra", LaVey attempts to shatter the classical depiction of Satanism as a cult of black mass and child sacrifice. As the smoke clears, he leads us through a surprisingly logical argument in favour of a life focused on self-indulgence. The Satanic Bible is less bible and more philosophy (with a few rituals thrown in to keep us entertained), but this philosophy is the backbone of a religion that, until LaVey entered the scene, was merely a myth of the Christian church. It took LaVey, and The Satanic Bible, to turn this myth into a legitimate public religion.--Brian Patterson, Amazon.com

Before getting on with my criticisms, I would like to say that I actually like most of the philosophy (not the religion) in this book -- which really is too say little more than that I had come to similar conclusions myself. (A statement I've also made of Stephen Mitchell's "Tao Te Ching" -- a book LeVay would probably not have cared for.) LeVay sometimes takes things litte too far, but only a little.

Having said that, I might note that, when it comes to logic, LeVay is not as faultless as he is often creditted with. He is only slightly more logical than good Christian, Pagan, and Eastern theologian. Often, there are (il)logical jumps, inconsistancies, rhetorical word-games, and babbling circumlocution. Also, he makes some techinical errors is the trivial he uses to eximplify his view: e.g., the English "Devil" is derived from the French "Diable," which comes from the Latin "Diablus," and ultimately the Greek "Diabolos," and is not related to the Hindi "devi" as LeVay states. On factual maters, I would guess LeVay to be 60-70% correct. All this is still at least as good (probably better) than most religious works, however.

LeVay's biggest short comings are in (1) justifying a Satanic religion, and (2) characterize human nature to narrowly and inflexibly. On the first mater, LeVay does try to answer the question of why he proposses a Satanic religion rather than just practical materialism, but his justification is basically a lot of babblement and he talks around himself. (As an atheist, I see no reason for having religion, and LeVay's answer was hardly satifying, let alone convincing.) On the second mater, LeVay barrows a lot of (now held doubtful) Freudian doctrine, and further assumes that there is a very large, encompassing human nature, which is virtually invariant. This second problem, the failiure to fully realize human bio-cognitive diversity leads to a fair amount of judgementallity. LeVay assumes any who don't fit his mold are "repressed" and dishonest, and holds open contempt for such as "liars." I have found that most Satanists I've talked to are terribly self-righteous and judgemental (in there own way), and this may be the root of it all. (This is not to say all Satanists are so narrow -- but this seems common, and makes sence if LeVay himself encoded it.)

Finally, I want to note, since its is frequently claimed, that Satanism is not a from a Christianity! (Nor is it Pagan.) It is obviously a religious movement unto itself, and not part of Christianity anymore than Christianity and Islam are part of Judaism (or Judaism part of ancient Paganism). This "Satanism=Christianity" rhetoric may be a fun way for Pagans to slam both opponents at once by comparing each to there own worst enemy -- but an objective reading of The Satanic Bible shows that Satanism (for better or worse) is something unto itself.

The Satanic Bible doesn't read like religious text. It might as well be called The Satanic Brainstorm. Although I don't agree with everything in it, this book makes more sense than anything I've ever read. By the end of it, the reader is left wanting to read everything LaVey's ever written. The one and only criticism I have is the constant restatement and emphasis on the hypocracy of Judeo-Christian ethics. To even understand this book, one most likely is already aware of these contradictions. Make that two criticisms; LaVey has his own occasional hypocracy, although it's very hard to pinpoint or even realize. Because so much of this book is shrouded with sarcasm, these seemingly hypocritical ideas may be intentional. All in all, this is the finest philosophical work I could have ever imagined. It puts all of your own ideas, that you were too blind or scared to realize, down on paper in a clear and frighteningly clever way. This book is the bible for the thinking man. Young impressionable teenagers shouldn't read it. I know a 16 year old who read it and got the totally wrong idea. One needs to already have a mature idea of what one believes before reading this. The sarcasm needs to be recognized for what it is.

Hmm...basically I think this is a good book because it summarizes all the beliefs of the Church of Satan--not intended to be a word-for-word guide to living, but a book that allows *individuals* to realize that they are not necessarily alone.

I, as many others, feel that there are some flaws to this philosophy, but it does have a strong immediate effect upon many people. Also, like others, the first time I read it I thought to myself, "I agree with a lot of these statements..."

To be a Satanist under the Church of Satan I do not think it is necessary to subscribe to all the statements put forth by LaVey, because it is an philosophy for *individuals*.

The first time I read this book it opened my mind even more to all types of religion/philosophy. I recommend this as good reading for *any* person questioning their own beliefs, or the beliefs of others...

The only main problem, I think, is the influence it has on pop culture Satanists--namely, those who listen to what they consider "evil" music. *Many* people seeking purpose, and therefore, rebellious "evil" in their young lives will try to attach theirselves to Satanism...

Church of Satan's form of Satanism is an *individual* philosophy for *strong-minded* *self-thinking* individuals, *not* those who wish to appear sinister or follow the others--such people are only following the herd mentality which is in complete opposition to Satanic beliefs!

In fact, much of what the Manson crew, and historically, most people claiming allegiance with Satan, do, is quite misleading from what the Church Of Satan believes in.

If you are one of these people, go ahead and buy the book if thou wilt, but realize no matter how much you try you will not become Satanic by the nature of your appearance, but only by your behavior and achievements.
