4.0 von 5 Sternen Schönes Einführungsbuch, zu viele Plattformen 4. November 2004
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf

5.0 von 5 Sternen Learn it quick! 14. Februar 2013
Von N. Newren - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Great book. I'm very pleased. I got this book because I needed to learn SQL and I needed to learn it quick! Each lesson took me about 15-30 minutes to go through (I read slow, and then I also did a lot of playing around with the databases at work), but it gave me all the background I needed to start programming.

I recommend this book for anyone new to SQL that just needs to learn it quick. It goes through the most commonly used SQL statements and their clauses, gives different examples for the most common DBMS, defines terms (like SQL and DBMS), and is short. There are a lot of advanced topics in the last lessons that he just breezes over (to keep it short), but that's what SQL in 24 hours is for -- to explain advanced topics. Honestly I thought about getting a bigger, more in depth book, but I'm really glad I got this smaller book. I would have been overwhelmed with any others. I felt like this book left off right where I wanted to just jump in and start programming.

Who this book isn't for: People not new to SQL (It just covers the basics and skims over more advanced topics -- but it wasn't written for advanced users; it's just an introduction.), people looking for a book about databases (this book only goes into the basic SQL stuff, though it does mention a couple good practices for database structure), anyone who wants an in-depth book about SQL (it really does just cover the basics).

In short, this book is for newbies who need to learn SQL quickly: just the basics, an intro into more advanced topics, it's very user friendly, easy to follow, and you can get through it in an afternoon if need be. Highly recommended.

Good book but wildcard characters such as asterisk (*) and /* */ don't show up in the Kindle version, they just appear as blank spaces

Update (Dec 1, '06): updates marked with >>>
Update (May 5, '12): updates marked with ***

-don't know which program you will be using for SQL and have no knowledge of SQL commands, this book is directed at you and you should get it.
*** I all but stopped programming with SQL for a few years and then came back to it in 2011. When I reviewed this book and my highlights within it, this text remained immensely useful.

-know which program you will be using, get a book on your specific program, because there is enough variation between the programs that another book will serve you much better.
>>>I think I will change this recommendation -- if you don't know SQL, consider this book regardless of which program you are working with.

-are familiar with a few commands in SQL, look for a different book because you will probably breeze through this book and not gain nearly as much as if your time was spent reading something else.

I was in the first category and found this book to be an excellent introduction. With the exception of 2-3 of the 18 lessons, this book is quite clear...those 2-3 lessons just take a bit more time getting familiar with the concepts. You won't find yourself breezing through the chapters in 10 minutes each, with the possible exception of the first 5 or so, but the lessons do only take about 20 minutes on average and are straight-forward.
>>>The book teaches by example, which I'm typically not a big fan of, but this book pulled it off well.
*** I now really enjoy instruction by example since it provides something concrete to hang onto and think about. This book probably was the initial prompt that made me a convert to this learning and teaching style, then Made to Stick made me a full convert to that style.

So, if you are brand new to SQL and don't know what program you will be using, buy this book and take an hour each day for a week to read it.
>>>If you are new to SQL, consider buying this book, but... you may also benefit from the free tutorial on w3schools . com, which is found under the PHP section. Having now done some MySQL for a website, I can certainly say this book is useful and I gained from its pages but I would also recommend the free tutorial before purchasing (both because it is free and because it is actually a very good tutorial on both PHP and MySQL).

5.0 von 5 Sternen SQL Lessons Which Take 10 Minutes Each To Complete 4. Juni 2005
Von DiamondDimples - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I purchased this book to refresh myself on the basics of SQL. I must say that I am thoroughly impressed with the simplicity of the material. It is a good book if you ever wanted to try learning SQL or need a refresher. The downloadable material along with the step-by-step instructions make this book a much better tutor than the SQL For Dummies.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great, but falls short 9. Oktober 2011
Von Jack - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
All lessons provide code snippets for examples as well as the corresponding output. Unfortunately there is no way to have a frame of reference since there is no information or illustration of the input. It's a great book, but as many other reviews stated, it is much more suited as a reference book. All in all I would say it is DEFINITELY worth the price, but personally it left me wanting to buy another SQL book, I'm thinking something from Joes 2 Pros.
