The iMac, however intuitively designed, comes with hardly any explanatory literature. Some books have sprung up to fill the gap and Sams Teach Yourself the iMac in 24 Hours is among the best. It walks you through everything--beginning with unpacking your iMac and hooking up its cables--in a style that assumes nothing without coming off as condescending.
Divided into 24 lessons, this book makes it easy to learn about a particular aspect of your iMac in depth during a single sitting. The author explains a feature in general terms first, then explains how to accomplish specific things (it's easy to refer back to these stepped procedures later). This approach works well for Quicken, Internet connectivity, iMac customisation and other pieces of the system, but AppleWorks coverage seems scanty (only 20 heavily illustrated pages deal with this important productivity suite). The book also would be better with an explanation of simple networks.
Sams Teach Yourself the iMac in 24 Hours earns points by embracing the iMac's more powerful features in addition to its fundamentals. The author explains the contents of the System Folder and provides an appetite-whetting introduction to AppleScript programming. -- DavidWall

This book teaches you so much--Apple, like most computer manufacturer's--tell's you almost nothing about the computer when you buy it. I have even recommended to MacZones "Hutch" (a great place to buy the Imac & stuff) that this book should be marketed with the computer--I was lost trying to figure out everything before! (MacZones is a mail-order Apple/PC mag--for me it was much more convenient to compare prices and spec's while flipping through various mag's in the wee hours of the am than to drive all over. MacZones can be reached at 1-800-248-0800, ext. 3226, or on the web site for MacZones.com. And nope, I have no interest in MacZones--just like this way of buying.
What I also love is that I had two questions unanswered by the book--I e-mailed the author, and he answered back within a few hours! That seems unusual for an author! Also, he invited me to an on-line chat at NetCafe, which also answered a lot of questions. I highly recommend this book! And this is coming from a first-time computer buyer, not a techno-geek.

I bought my first Mac, an iMac, at a local CompUSA, but I couldn't get anywhere with it, because there wasn't a real manual. Just a little card that got me as far as turning it on and that's all. I bought Mr. Steinberg's book, "Sams Teach Yourself the iMac in 24 Hours" and followed the instructions. It didn't take me very long before I got the iMac to connect to America Online and I was sending faxes to a business colleague in New York. This is a great book, easy reading, and I enjoyed it immensely.

I read this entire book one afternoon at Barnes and Noble (did I say that?!) And I must say, it is one of the best on the market. It takes you by the hand and very gently leads you through everything you need to know to be successful with this computer beauty! Easy to read, easy to understand and you don't have to be a "dummie" to GET IT! Gene, keep up the good work. I really loved this book.
