The late Sam Walton was one of the shrewdest and richest merchants in America. Centered on the building of his Wal-Mart empire, his book, like fellow magnate Sandra Kurtzig's CEO: Building a $400 Million Company from Ground Up ( LJ 5/1/91), is light on biography. However, readers will enjoy the folksy narrative of the small-town millionaire who revolutionized retail distribution. Walton also addresses accusations against him, such as running the competition out of town. Coauthor Huey does a fine job of incorporating candid testimonials from family members and associates, who thought Walton's ideas were sometimes silly. Shortly after Walton's death, the book was given an overly sentimental postscript (a minor detraction) and rushed into print. Highly recommended for public and academic business collections.

No matter what you think of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Sam Walton really was a great leader and businessperson. This book is sort of a 'holy grail' for those who wish to make it not only in life but in virtually any time of environment where you have customers (this also means customers that DON'T pay, for example Government, etc.).
I work for a division of Wal-Mart, SAM'S Club, and this book is 'required reading' by everyone in the manager in training (MIT) program. We're working on getting several of these for our associate training room.
If you follow what Mr. Sam explains in this book, you will have very little problems you can't fix. Sure people will try to take advantage of you, but they are such a minority after they find out that you are really there trying to take care of them...that's how the 'Wal-Mart family' aptmosphere takes hold.
Are all Wal-Mart stores up to par? Probally not and that's not anyones fault really. The company has thousands of stores and hundreds of clubs and not to mention hundreds of international locations. The challenge is getting everyone to 'become' Mr. Sam and this book should be required reading to help in that effort. The principles are simple to learn and follow and have helped thousands if not millions.
Final word...purchase this book and learn why Wal-Mart is so large and successful today and apply it to your own organization and company.

No matter what your opinion of Wal Mart, this is an great story of a man with a dream, and one of the most successful entrepreneurs of the last century. It details how Wal Mart came to be the company it is today, including: strategies for finding new store locations, attracting customers, keeping them coming back, adding a personal touch to the discount shopping experience, merchandising, and community relations. Aside from the busines apects, this is a tale of a man took everything in stride including everyday setbacks to the fame and (increadible) fortune amassed during his life time. Like everything else at Wal Mart this book will only cost you a few bucks. If you despise Wal Mart or the book, it might come in handy if you run out of toilet paper.

I didn't really expect to like this book. Afterall, what could be so compelling about some guy who started a bunch of discount stores in Arkansas? Boy, was I wrong. This book is a jewel. It's a must read for anyone in business, whether a small business or a big corporation. You'll never look at a store the same way again after you read this book. You can easily believe that Sam Walton's approach would improve most business. Work hard. Work smart. Learn from your mistakes. Treat people right (employees and customers). Keep your eye on the ball and the bottom line. Don't listen to naysayers. Keep a smile on your face. Sounds like good advice to me!

Sam not only makes you dream big but inspires you to follow your dreams.
For someone not having 'lived' the 60s and 70s in small town America, it was an insight into the All American values of old.
My business and personal links with Wal-Mart testify to how Sam's basic values are still a driving force at Wal-Mart

It is a book that makes you dream and gives you 10 rules to achieve your dream.
I read only one - it was all I needed.
The rule was 'Swim Upstream - Break all the Rules'.

This book is not only the history of one of the best American enterprises ever, but also a word for the future. Those who are looking for some good advices how to sell this or that would be disappointed, but those who are looking for inspiration in their business or life might find it very fulfilling. There is no recipe for a good business in the book, but among the rules, that Sam Walton formulates at the end the most important, he says, is "Break all rules!". This book is a must read for every businessman.

Sam Walton knew the price of success and paid it.
He changed retailing forever. He also made himself a billionaire and made millionaires of many others who shared his dream. But the greatest value of this book to me is its inspiration. Sam's "Ten Rules That Worked For Me" will work of anybody. You can run a company or a life by them. Anybody who becomes the country's richest man is worth listening to. He'll make you a believer.

I felt compelled to check out “Made In America” by Sam Walton out of curiosity and pride with being a Walmart employee. I was exposed to some of Walton’s philosophy during my orientation and felt curious to check out more. The following are some of the tidbits included in “Made In America” by Sam Walton:
Pages 1-3: He mentions how his life changed after interviewing with Forbes magazine in October 1985 (after he was named the “richest man in America). A harrowing experience is also recalled when he talks about being “ambushed by The Lifestyles Of The Rich and Famous Guy” at a tennis tournament.
Page 70: Jim Walton recalled how some writers thought that his father (Sam Walton) was a “grand strategist who psychically carried out plans and actualized them with precision”. However, he mentions that the reality was that his father actually “thrived on change” when it came to many decisions.
Pages 80-81: Sam Walton listed some of his family pictures such as those of this parents and grandparents, as well as his wife, children, and a Ben Franklin franchise in Newport, Arkansas.
Page 95: Sam Walton created and wrote down a five year plan of the business ideas that he intended to accomplish. He mentioned that he saved these plans for a long time and found (several years later) that his target goals were exceeded by at least 15 to 20 percent.
Pages 240-241: There is an inclusion of more pictures from Sam Walton’s years with Walmart such as a happy picture of him with his wife Helen. There is also a fascinating 1990 feature of HillaryClinton as Wal-Mart’s Board of Directors.
There is also a postscript by Rob Walton due to the fact that Sam Walton was in the final stages of his life when writing this book. There is much more featured in “Made in America” by Sam Walton for those who are curious to know more about the founder behind Walmart and the actual company of Walmart.
