'A beguiling insight into the enigma of childhood.' (Sunday Times)

Synopsis

A collection of pictures which record the photographer's children as they explore their woodland home in Virginia. They show the ambiguity and dramas of family life - some are posed and some are real - and the images range from the fantastic to the everyday.

I was unaware of the controversy regarding Mrs. Mann's work until recently and find the harsh words totally unwarranted and the attitudes unbelievable. This book reflects her understanding of what it's like to be a child in a rural environment and has NOTHING to do with pornography.
The nudity which some find so shocking is natural for kids. It's not until later when we learn our bodies are "bad" that we stop displaying them. That some attach the nudity in the shots of her children with sex speaks poorly of them and those who perpetuate this attitude.
This is a wonderful book that most of you will appreciate and identify with, making you recall memories of your own youth. And, if you were brought up in a suburban area you'll even learn some of what it's like being a kid in the country. However, if your looking for a book with snapshots of smiling kids, you'll be disappointed. This is a photo essay on an all too brief time of our lives, with the pictures being neither cute nor pretty, the photographer having chosen instead to show emotion and reality, and has done so beautifully.

I find it a pity if issues of childhood and whatever blinds anybody to the fact that Sally Mann is one of our greatest photographers, judged on pure aesthetics. Simply awesome. The word is Beauty.

All of the photographs in this collection were taken with an 8x10 view camera, even those that have the appearance of candid, random snapshots. Many of the images are carefully manipulated in the darkroom to give one of the subjects an eerie, almost angelic luminescence in scenes dominated by hardship, tragedy, and crushing rural poverty. Sally Mann is a major artist, supported by Guggenheim, NEH and NEA grants, and this is some of her very best work. Readers should be warned that some will consider this work to border on child pornography. While this is absolutely not the case (and I vigorously support prosecution of those who exploit children in any fashion), in some localities this could almost be a "dangerous" book to own. Sally Mann's disturbing and transcendent vision will outlast our current hysteria and misunderstanding and will endure as photographic literature.

Very nice pictorial work. While a few of the photographs were stiff, most reflected what one would expect to see in normal country childhood. Although Mann has been the center of controversy for some of the pictures in this work, I fail to see anything evil in this work. Yes there a few pictures of her children naked, but nothing an attentive country mother or father has not see their children do at some point in time. Perhaps this is the point of contention for some viewers. They simply do not understand or identify with country living.
Overall this work reflects country childhood very nicely.

"I grew up around nude kids. I went nude whenever I could back then and have continued going nude at every opportunity throughout my life. When I leaf through 'Immediate Family', I see kids doing what I and the other kids did, and what naturist kids still do. I relate to the Mann kids as fellow human beings and fellow naturists." No, I didn't write that. I wish I did. That was the response I got from Jon McCreight of the Minnesota Naturists when I asked him for his comment. I don't know who I envy more, Mr. McCreight or Sally Mann's three children. Having grown up in a puritanical family, I have since envied children who are allowed to corporeally admire others and to be corporeally admired in return.

I`ve owned this book for many years now and it never fails to take me back to my own childhood each time I look at it.Who hasn`t had the pox or had a father perform some sort of 1st aid for our cuts and bruses or skinny dippied down on the river.I highly recommend this book. Some advice for those who may be worried that it could be legally dangerious to own this book in some areas of the U.S.- If some local prosecutor is crazy enough to go after a U.S. citizen for owning this book than when you walk away with the title to the local court house,I`am sure you`ll also get your book back. The 1st Amendment applies in every state. So I say buy this book put that other stuff out of your mind and enjoy.

Very diappointing. This book was advertised and reviewed giving one the impression of it as being a master piece of nude child photography as well as an excellent depiction of childhood. To me the word childhood brings forth connotations if innocence and joyous abandon. Only two photos in this book contain so much as a smile, those being " The Easter Dress" (cute) and the other being " Jessie and the deer" which depicts a very little girl standing next to a dead deer with it's throat cut in the back of a truck (not cute).
All of the rest of the photos contain blank facial expressions if not down right frowns. Sally Mann's "models" at times appear to be unwilling participants of her work. " The Last Time Emmett Modeled Nude,1987" is one such example, however, it does very well capture his little boy charm. He may have by the way been nude for the photographer, but not for the camera as he is submerged from the waist down in the river.
The facial expressions in many of these pictures remind me of those I have seen from the Great Depression Era or those from Third World Countries rather than life in everyday America. "Virginia at 3" and "The Wet Bed" do effectively visualize that innocence we look for in childhood pictures whether clothed or not.
There were by my count only 15 nudes out of 65 photos unless you count little girls of ages 3-9 with no shirts on as nudes. There was only one nude shot of Emmett, an intentional genital shot, with melted popsicle smeared over his lower abdomen and thighs. This shot doesn't even have a face. This was not a picture of her son who just happened to be nude, but a picture of his private parts with something smeared all over him. This is what she calls art???
All I can say is it's a good thing that there's not a satisfaction guarantee with this book.
