Said to hold enough power to dominate humanity, the Seven Relics of the Buddha were first hidden by a secretive brotherhood of seven monks who called themselves "the Temple." Their mission was simple: guard the Relics until they were needed to save humanity.

Thirteen hundred years passed. The Temple's membership swelled with Disciples. Elders came and went, adding their wisdom to the Relics. In that time, countless wars, famines, and disasters struck. Controversy within the Temple swirled. Yet the Relics remained hidden, the location of each known only to its guardian Elder.

Then, five years ago, rebels within the Temple rose up and hunted down the seven Elders, seeking the Relics for their twisted ends. But the rebellion was fruitless. The Elders died mute. No one else knew where the Relics were. The Temple fell into civil war. Hundreds of Disciples died. The bloody hunt for the Relics continues to this day.

Joshua Grey, a Japanese-American orphan and former Disciple once known as "The Angel of Death," wants out. After years of rage-fueled vengeance over the deaths of his friends and fiancé, Joshua withdrew from the world and spends his days in penance on an isolated Texas farm. He thinks he's found finally peace.

But when his old mentor appears on his doorstep with a dying command, Joshua is thrown into a global race to find the Sakura Blue, one of the Seven Relics and the key to an ancient ritual that will save his mentor's soul... and possibly his own.

Working with a mysterious woman pursuing her own agenda, Joshua must defeat a twisted sociopath hell-bent on vengeance. It quickly becomes the deadliest mission of his life. But to succeed, he must remain true to the Buddha's teachings. That means no more killing.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Long ride with a great finish 26. November 2012

The story took a while to build up, but ultimately I was sucked into the journey. Not typically my kind of book, what with a lot of violence, but the story is compelling and very well thought out. The book is very descriptive and it's easy to imagine the scenes in the many locations the main character visits. Sometimes these descriptions did weigh down the momentum of the story, but action was always around the corner to drive the plot forward again. I grew used to this and found it to be an interesting push and pull between the main character's meditation on the current surroundings and the sudden disruption of this by the continuation of the chase. All in all a very well-executed plot in all its details. I look forward to the next book in the series!

I picked this book up because it was on sale, and really enjoyed it. I think it did a good job of moving forward at a good clip, the action scenes were written in a way that was technical enough to convey the skill of the combatants, but still remained exciting. I like that there was a strong female character, but not an overt love story. The author also did a good job of explaining the mystical elements of the book as the plot progressed, rather than sticking a long explaination in the beginning that would have bogged the work down. There are some small plot issues, but I would definitely read more from this author.

I have to be honest and admit upfront that the author is a friend of mine and I actually read one of the earlier manuscripts even before publication, but even with this bias in mind I found Sakura Blue to be entertaining and an interesting twist on the fantasy genre in a modern setting. I enjoyed the descriptions of the settings which I know the author tried to recreate meticulously from his own travels as much as possible and as others have commented, the pace is nice and fast and the book is easy to dive into from the start. I think it is an excellent first novel, although it could benefit from tighter and more thorough editing (which is why I gave 4 instead of 5 stars). I look forward to more novels set in this universe.
4.0 von 5 Sternen Tight thriller 13. April 2012

Despite the supernatural premise, the book is plotted and paced like a Robert Ludlum novel. Jones does a good job taking Buddhism--something ordinarily associated (in the Western world) as soft and new-agey--and giving it a vicious, venal twist.

Pacing is great. The main character Joshua is always on the move, always having to react to circumstances, always having to figure out what's going on, and what the next move is. It's a page turner. Jones also does a great job constructing his settings, filling them in with believable detail (though this is somewhat uneven; Texas and Tokyo are more fully realized than Poland and Ireland.

I look forward to having the supernatural "system" fleshed out some more, but this is a great start.
5.0 von 5 Sternen A Terrific Ride - Ready for More! 30. August 2011

While I came at Sakura Blue with the skepticism I have come to hold for works from first-published authors, I came away entertained and eager for more. Jones weaves a terrific story. His main character, Joshua, is likable and believable, which is critical getting this particular reader to embrace the premise of the powers he wields and to revel in them. The story is compelling - a quest given to a damaged disciple, who must come face to face with the dark side in trying to complete it. Yes, there are elements one will recognize in the powers Joshua wields (perhaps explaining my allusion to the "dark side"), but this is a whole new take. I'm looking forward to the next installment, to learn more about this brave new world.
