Richard North Patterson steals from the headlines to kick start No Safe Place, but then charts a course that is all his own. He starts with Senator Kerry Kilcannon, a candidate in the presidential primaries whose brother was assassinated right after winning the California primary 12 years before. Then he adds the fact that Kilcannon seems unable to run clear of a two-year-old affair. Sound familiar so far? Add to the mix the fact that Kilcannon is himself being hunted by a right-to-life activist who has already killed three people in a women's clinic, and you have a real thriller.

Patterson has the reputation for being a writer of courtroom dramas, but what he really writes are taut thrillers scripted like great movies--the books jump cut from the past to the present, in the process developing parallel plot lines that are masterfully and satisfyingly resolved. And he does this in the context of authentic situations, using characterization to make you care; he steers you through complex plots, though often away from the path the story will eventually take. Silent Witness and The Final Judgement, Patterson's two best novels until No Safe Place, are indeed courtroom dramas, but they involve people with serious aspirations. The jump to people with political aspirations is easily and deftly executed. It's a small pleasure, but still fun, to find a few of Patterson's recurring characters (Tony Lord and his wife) with walk-on parts.

At times this thriller is not a traditional page-turner. There are moments when the descriptions of domestic violence, for example, cause one to put the book down for a while they are delivered with such power. No Safe Place is just the right reach for Patterson, and the perfect place to spend some time. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Gebundene Ausgabe .

Einleitungssatz
At eight in the morning of his last day in Boston, Sean Burke paced out tight circles on the corner of Kenmore Square, waiting for the abortionist, a nine-millimeter semiautomatic handgun hidden in the inside pocket of his army jacket. Lesen Sie die erste Seite

Richard North Patterson is one of America's best contemporary fiction writers. His character development is outstanding, and his ability to consistently tell a good story is impressive.

True, there are times when this story kind of lags, however it is representative of the election process. I would bet that reporters and politicians alike become absolutely bored with day after day of the same thing...looking in the same place for another story. So to that end, Patterson conveys what it must feel like to be a part of all that. And he does it very, very well.

The negative reviews are thoughtless. And as to the person who said this story is not thought-provoking, I say go back to your mindless world.

I found myself looking at the page numbers to see how far I had to go to finish this book. I almost didn't. But, I am surprised to say that by the time it was over I actually Liked the guy! If you are at all opposed to pro-choice rights, you might not be interested in this story. I have to admit that the abortion scene was really sickening and repulsive to me. So, I suggest skipping that section of the book! Anyway, although tedious,I ended up thinking about these characters long after I finished the book, I guess it made an impact after all.

Sometimes you get lucky. 9. Oktober 1999
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
This looks like another "guy runs for president and bad things happen" writing exercise. Look again. Patterson's saga reaches for your heart while it unfolds a deceivingly simple plot. His characters become more real with each revelation, through a mixture of flashbacks and chronicle. By the last page you will wish desperately to meet (and vote for!) the candidate, as well as his friends and confidants. This novel would (will?) make a fine movie, one which would offer more than a few great parts for some strong actors. This is such a well-constructed story, though, that Hollywood would probably ruin it.

Safer to avoid it
This book did keep my interest to some extent until the title character has an affair on his wife and lacks the communication skills with his lover to have her avoid what was a... Lesen Sie weiter...

A little lengthy, but engaging
It drags a little in a few places, and for those who are a tad squeamish, the domestic violence undercurrent may be troubling, but overall an excellent book. Lesen Sie weiter...

Slow, but the end worth it.
It's my Patterson first, and i was a little dissapointed. Though this is the first book I've read in years that hte charecters are so real and perfect that I simply adore them. Lesen Sie weiter...

Good fun reading a novel about a senator fighting through the preliminaries to become presidential candidate for his party and comparing it to the real-life saga of Bush v. Lesen Sie weiter...

Began the book, but unlike every other Richard North Patterson novel, was able to put it down regularly. I still have NOT completed it and probably won't. Lesen Sie weiter...

Boring; very slow read
This was one book I could not wait to finish. Politics aside, even the story was choppy. Very slow, mostly uninteresting characters. I will not buy another one of his books.

A pleasent book about a chaotic presidential campaign
It is a nice book, well written and full of suspense. However, the author puts too much of his own fantasies in it: the hero is too perfect to be true and his agenda is too... Lesen Sie weiter...
