1.0 von 5 Sternen Unsatisfactory conclusion--a waste of time. 5. Juni 2014

This book is the first in a series, so I get that there will be some unfinished business to compel the reader to go on to the next book. HOWEVER, other than completing the romance aspect of the plot, NOTHING was resolved. On the positive side, the main characters were interesting and the pace of this novel was compelling. It was a clean story, though quite repetitive at times. As a reader I felt cheated at the ending. Essentially, there were numerous plot lines in addition to the romance going on in this story: who was coming after Anne and Sophia, why were they so persistent, and most importantly, where was the leak in the Marshall's organization that allowed the perpetrators to always be able to locate the protected witnesses. I feel the author could have resolved many, if not all, of these elements and still have whetted my appetite for a continuation (maybe by focusing on the peripheral characters and their challenges). As it is now, I have absolutely no interest in wasting time reading more cliffhangers in this series.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Sometimes You Can Run... But You Can't Always Hide... 16. Februar 2014

Safe By The Marshal's Side is number one in a new series from Love Inspired Suspense books. This book deals with the Witness Protection program which is run by the US Marshal's Service, hence the title.

Annie Delacourte and her precious toddler daughter Sophia have been on the run for over a year, trying to hide with the help of US Marshall Hunter Davis and his team, waiting for her chance to testify against the men who killed her husband. But suddenly there is no where safe to stay as their secret life and location have been leaked and attempts are made on their lives. Hunter is determined to keep Annie and Sophia safe no matter what it takes, but somebody on the inside isn't who they appear to be and the circle of people he can trust to help keep them hidden is getting smaller every day. Hunter is willing to risk his life for a woman and child he has come to admire and care for but will it be enough to stop the people who want to see them dead? Is everybody on his team as trustworthy as they seem?

Safe by the Marshal's Side is a mystery, suspense type book with a little brewing romance thrown in as Annie and Hunter begin to wonder if their feelings have gone beyond that of witness and protector. There are some tense moments as serious attempts are made on Annie's life and by the end we are anxious to know who has betrayed the program and put them all at risk. What was Annie's husband really involved in when he was gunned down in their kitchen with his last words telling her to keep their baby safe? Since this is book one in the series, I'm sure the answers will be coming with each new release. Next up and available now is The Baby Rescue by Margaret Daley, Stolen Memories by Liz Johnson coming in March, Top Secret Identity by Sharon Dunn available in April and then ending with Family in Hiding in May by Valerie Hansen and Undercover Marriage by Terri Reed coming in June of 2014.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good Clean Suspense 7. Januar 2014
Von rhonda - Veröffentlicht auf

I enjoy reading Shirlee's books. This had good suspense about who was trying to kill the witness. Lots of action, likeable characters, cute kid, doing the right thing even though its hard. Also is a clean romance. I was sorry to see these characters go.

The pace is good, good dialog and action. We are never sure who all to trust. Who is leaking the witness where about.

Annie walked into her house and witnessed her husband's murder and if their gun had not jammed would have died also. Annie agreed to testify against the men she saw in her house. Now she is close to testifying someone has located her safe house. Leaving threats to her.

Annie's dreams of family died with her husband murder. She has a little girl she will protect at all costs. She found out her husband was lying to her.

Hunter's been protecting Annie for over a year. Now is close to the time for her testifying someone has been leaking the safe houses location. He trusts his team but not sure where the leak is coming from. He is getting close to Annie and her daughter. Where he generally does not get close to those he protects.

I had a good time reading Safe by the Marshal's Side. I will continue to read books by Shirlee McCoy in the future.

It does mention church and the bible. Hunter's has enjoyed escorting Annie to church and realizes how much he has missed it in his life.

I was given this ebook to read and in return agreed to give honest review of it by Netgalley and Harlequin.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Not bad, but not great.. a little repetitive and missing a huge plot point 12. Juni 2014

First, let me start with what I liked about this book, the main characters. They were people I could relate to, seemed like your everyday kind of people you'd barbecue with or go out to dinner with aside from his unusual job as a US Marshal and her living in witness protection with her young daughter, having witnessed her husband's death.

The bones of the story are good. I felt like the meat of what could have been a great story got lost in the very repetitive "gotta keep you safe/I've got to protect my daughter/you're not helping me keep you safe/ gotta keep you safe..." I turned to my husband at one point and said, "I think the phrase 'keep you safe' is on every single page." Ok, we get it... It's his job/passion to protect this young widow and her daughter, and after being with them 24/7 over the last year, he's developing some attachment but is forcing it down so it doesn't interfere with "keeping them safe."

Another small detail that bothered me is how much emphasis is placed on the widow testifying at trial, the Marshals risking her safety and separating her from her toddler by repeatedly having her meet with her lawyer for hours and hours to solidify testimony that will convict her husband's killers. The reader is reminded of this huge, upcoming event in every chapter, but I turn the page to begin another chapter and it's basically, "whew! Glad that's over and done with! Now I don't have to be in witness protection anymore and am free to kiss that sexy US Marshal, and maybe even run away with him?" I skipped back several pages on my Kindle thinking I had jumped a chapter. Why are there no details about her getting to the courthouse, stepping on the stand, facing her husband's killers and delivering awesome testimony (that she's been practicing for over a year) to send these murderers to prison? I felt so cheated when I realized that was missing.

I liked the characters in this story; I identified with them and rooted for them to conquer their personal demons and give in to their feelings for one another, but I feel like we all got cheated out of something great here. Hunter and Annie as the leads and me as the reader. There was so much potential with these great characters, but their story fell way flat.
