Produktbeschreibungen

Amazon.de

An inside look at the higher wisdom of teamwork from Chicago Bulls' head coach Phil Jackson. At the heart of the book is Jackson's philosophy of mindful basketball -- and his lifelong quest to bring enlightenment to the competitive world of professional sports, beginning with a focus on selfless team play rather than "winning through intimidation". Sacred Hoops is not just for sports fans, but for anyone interested in the potential of the human spirit.

As winner of 2 three-peat basketball champions as coach of the Chicago Bulls, and now with the Lakers, you have to listen to his team approach as quest for spiritual depth in the game. Although perhaps more of interest to the basketball fan, Jackson's Zen-Christian-Lakota insights into the ego and anger of a high caliber (and $) team, and as a grand experiment with the truth (to paraphrase Thich Nhat Hanh). The use of Tex Winter's triangle offense (five-man tai chi), as a team building exercise was fascinating. His descriptions of his own awakening from a Pentecostal background, and continual striving to understand deeper principles and make mid-course correction not just to the team but himself. As he says, "Being aware is more important that being smart". A good read!

In lieu of the recent NBA lockout and the subsequent retirement of its premier star attraction, Michael Jordan, reading Sacred Hoops, brilliantly written by former Bulls' coach Phil Jackson, provides a very refreshing and thought-provoking look into the money-driven and often soulessness world of professional basketball. The book takes a wonderful look into the mind of Jackson, raised by Pentacostal parents in Montana, who later became enlightened by Zen and Native American principles during his playing career with the New York Knicks and early coaching stints in Albany, N.Y. and Puerto Rico. Jackson's higher wisdom of teamwork - his philosophy of preaching the expression of the power of mindfulness and compassion in action - became a paradigm for his success in guiding the Bulls to six NBA championships in the 1990s (the paperback edition chronicles through the 1995-96 season). The book also serves as an insightful memoir full of stories about Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Toni Kukoc and Dennis Rodman. For devotees of Jordan, Sacred Hoops serves as a nice complement to other books written about him and shows how Jackson instilled in Jordan - and his teammates - the ability to act with a clear mind and stay calmly focused at all times; how he changed the Bulls into a team that served the "we" instead of "me". Sacred Hoops is an inspiring book - one which you won't want to put down.

Phil Jackson finds order in chaos. His concept of being "fully present" is a gem. This book is an easy read (I did it in one sitting) full of nuggets of wisdom. Phil is obviously well read and shares his insight in a thought provoking manner. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I don't recall having read a book quicker in my life. For some reason I had Sacred Hoops with me when I entered hospital for a minor heart ailment and it was certainly a good tonic to take. I am a rugby union coach and I was pleased to read of aspects that I have as part of my style. It was interesting to see that multi-millionaire sportspeople have the same idiosyncracies, desires, and motivations as totally amateur rugby players. Humans are so similar. If coaches of all sports could read this book and adopt the philosophies then athletes would be able to develop their full potential and enjoy their sport here and now. It would be nice if administrators could learn from Sacred Hoops but greed is difficult to overcome. If this book can encourage one young athlete to compete with a selfless spirit then life will be that little bit better. Thank you, Phil, for the book, for the teams, and for the compassion.

In today's me world, an attitude by no means limited to atheletics (witness the runaway salaries of today's CEOs), examples of people who grasp that the most effective path to strength is the one that leads through community are precious and too rare. Mr. Jackson allows us to follow the evolution of the Bulls from a group of very talented individuals into a team in the best sense of the word. There are lessons galore of all shapes and sizes, but the one that I most appreciated is that the pursuit of excellence can be very successful without sacrificing honor, trust and commitment to something outside of ourselves. And make no mistake, Mr. Jackson is a winner of the first order. Sacred Hoops should be mandatory reading for every high school athelete in this country.

This book is great reading for those who lose faith in modern day sports and society in general. For once, you hear someone talk about teamwork, selflessness, sacrifice, positive attitude, etc. These are foreign concepts to most of today's NBA stars, but are what success is really all about. I also applaud Phil Jackson for daring to be different. Seeing things differently is often at the core of many successes. In this case, its using the power of the mind and selfless attitudes that are positioned as keys to taking you to the top. These ideas transcend basketball and make for good reading for anyone. I only wish their were more "originals" with a conscience like Phil Jackson.

I always knew there was someone who had a truly selfless coaching philosophy and I am glad he wrote a book. There is hope for the corporate world.
This book captures the essence of Phil Jackson.
I think this book is a must read for anyone who manages people and thinks you must brow beat performance out of them. If you have a manager like that, send him/her a copy.
I felt totally at peace while reading this book. This book is a very easy read and I enjoyed it throughly. I am certain you will enjoy it too!!
