In the first two books of the trilogy "Chosen of the Gods" and "Divine Hammer" Chris Pierson managed to show the ascent of the monk Beldyn towards quasi godhood and tyrannical theocratic rule. The character was a literary success and especially "Divine Hammer" set the standard for character development in a gaming novel. Now "Sacred Fire" tells the final move in the story of the fall of Istar.
So you open and start reading a book of which you already know the ending. There are several questions to be asked of such a book. Does it bore me? Will the fall of Beldyn be as masterfully told as his ascend? Will the book be as vivid as its predecessors?
The answers are no, no, and yes. The novel moves surprisingly well and there are enough twists and turns to keep reader interest high. Unfortunately the Kingpriests character has lost some of his multifacetedness due to him succumbing into madness. But boy oh boy does Pierson paint compelling picture of Istar at its height. There are gladiator games, a rather twisted version of slavery "for the good of the people", religious fanaticism, and a main character that despairs under the weight of his vision.
Istar indeed falls in the end due to the first cataclysm. Indeed everything plays out as expected. But due to Chris Piersons mastery this book is a victorious closure for a superb trilogy.
