The Souls of Black Folk has become a staple of courses in American literature and culture, and it is a must read for anyone generally interested in the world we share. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Terri Oliver have done us all a great service by putting together what is easily the best edition of this twentieth-century classic: their preface alone is a valuable contribution to scholarship, and the contexts and criticism sections are a rich lode of information. I look forward to assigning this edition in a number of the college courses I teach.

W.E.B. Du Bois uses these essays to describe how Blacks' quiet acceptance of racism and slavery only stifles their chance for advancement in a society that basically considers them a problem. He is totally convinced that racism exist because America has not been educated about the gifted souls of Black folks! I believe Du Bois does an excellent job in describing how every African American in this country feels when he says, "he simply wishes to make it possible for a man to be both [Black] and an American without . . . having the doors of Opportunity closed roughly in his face." This is truly a powerful collection of essays!

As an 18 year old African American in the year 2000 it is essential that I know not only black but American History. The Souls of Black Folk was a veiw of the truth hidden deeply within all African Americans, the love of God, a true heart and loyalty to those who we think have pure hearts. It help me to undersatnd more of who I really am and not what others want me to be. It was the orgin of the respect in a ebnoy skin complection and its beauty. A must read for all those wishing to understand the mind and hearts of African Americans.

Must read for anyone interested in American history and lit.

Well-written, prescient, and anti-Semitic
