Kurzbeschreibung

A young man of Dublin walks past a row of streetlights at night–and they go out, one by one, as he passes.

An engineer in Woodville, Washington, is stopped by police and his car searched to find out what he's doing to their streetlights.

An Australian in the entertainment industry parks his car in a parking lot, and the light above him goes out–until the following evening when he parks in precisely the same space and the light comes on again.

And that's not all. When a guest in a restaurant in Athens, Greece, asks that the music be turned down, they refuse–whereupon she "kills" the restaurant's electricity and they eat the rest of their meal by candlelight. Other people affect traffic lights, computers, railway crossings...

This is Street Light Interference (SLI). Once considered to be folklore–something that happened to a friend of a friend–today it is recognized as a scientific enigma with implications for our knowledge of the universe, including ourselves. In this, the first full-length book on SLI, we hear from some of the hundreds of SLIders who have reported their uncanny experiences, and consider the wider implications of this fascinating phenomenon.

"As strange as it sounds--people being able to turn street lights off at a distance-- this excellent book by Hilary Evans shows that it is a very real phenomenon. As this is the first full length book on the subject, this is destined to become a classic.” -- David Taylor, Northern Earth

“Anomalist Books have carved for themselves a first-class niche in the field of publishing thought-provoking and near-unique titles on anomalies of the mind, the physical world, and those strange realms beyond. And, SLIders is a great addition to [their] ever-expanding list of titles.” --  Nick Redfern, Reviews of the Mysterious Kind

HILARY EVANS is a writer on anomalous topics; he has previously authored books on UFOs, ghosts & apparitions, and many other subjects. His most recent publication, co-authored with Robert Bartholomew, is Outbreak: An Encyclopedia of Extraordinary Social Behavior. He has been a policeman in Palestine and a private tutor in Turkey, and thoroughly enjoyed his early career in advertising. Twice a Council Member of the Society for Psychical Research, he helped to found ASSAP (Association for the Scientifi c Study of Anomalous Phenomena), which has pioneered research into the SLI phenomenon and to which all proceeds of this book will go to fund further research. Aside from his writing, he helped his wife found the Mary Evans Picture Library, a leading historical picture archive. His favorite occupation is browsing in antiquarian bookstores. Even their bathroom is lined with books.

Be Prepared For A Real Head Scratcher 9. Juli 2010
Von W. R. Stockstill Jr. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
The ability to cause SLI-street light interference is the theme of this book. And boy, is it a head scratcher! Author Hilary Evans has been collecting stories of people worldwide who claim to not only be able to turn street lights off, but also, less frequently, on. And its more then that, much more. As Evans points out, once you identify one piece of the mystery, another part (like a Russian doll) is exposed. Some seem to effect lights at 50 feet, others 5. Some turn lights off for the most part. Others turn lights on the most. Usually when they try to mentally effect a light, nothing happens. But when they stop consciously trying to turn them off mentally, the light blinks out. And other types of lights and appliances are affected by some.

While short on specific answers, SLIders is full of theories, suggestions and different angles from which to view this mystery. Its obvious that Evans has been researching this phenomena for a very long time in that possible solutions readers find themselves thinking of he shoots down again and again. Dang it! More then the phenomena itself, the book brings to light just another example that man in all its infinite wisdom still can't figure out something that should be easy to solve. What I would love to see as a follow up is findings from extensive experiments in lab controlled conditions with those who have SLI ability. But as Evans points out about the ability, that may be a waste of time because its not something that is done consciously. Most seem to find they can only do it while in a certain mindset such as while extreme circumstances were happening in their lives. And what is causing it may not be something that science at this time can even measure.

This one is a real head scratcher. Evans book gives a more then ample intro into just another of the mysteries that occur around us that most don't even know is happening. Expand your mind and prepare to be stumped.

FINALLY! I have something to show my arrogant, patronizing doctor! 25. Februar 2011

I've been waiting for this book for years! I went for many not putting things together, then more years not realizing there were others like me. One doesn't typically think to ask others if they make watches stop, short out appliances, and erase data from floppy disks by holding them in their hand while in the presence of someone very unbalanced and scary. And others just flat out don't believe you, or tell you what you're claiming is impossible. I went through a period of extreme stress after my daughter passed away, I became bankrupt, and everything was in a downhill slide for several years. At one point, every time I flipped a switch, I'd fry some device. We had to keep replace light bulbs on a regular basis. I even came to a point of almost losing a job because I kept fouling up equipment and making track lights explode when I came into my office (they were on a high vaulted ceiling, requiring someone to bring in a tall ladder each time). My most dramatic occurrence happened one morning when I'd had an argument with my husband just before leaving for work. I was fuming. Got into my car and turned the key in the ignition, and all four of my automatic windows started going up and down, at different rates. I kept punching madly at the control buttons on the driver's side door, but they wouldn't stop until I got out of the car. I finally found an online forum one day, with dozens of accounts by other SLIders. I don't think the site's still up, but what a day of confirmation, relief, and vindication that was!

SLIghtly Strange 1. Mai 2011

In the interest of full disclosure: 1. I am an utter skeptic of all things paranormal and 2. Streetlights turn off when I drive beneath them.
(I've given this book 3 stars not because of its subject matter, but because I think it's solidly presented and solidly written...but not exceptional either in writing or organization.)

That said, I found this book marvelously entertaining. It nicely straddled the line between mouth-hanging-open credulity (all too common) and hear-no, see-no, speak-no skepticism (all too mean-spirited).

A large part of the book is spent actually asking: If this really happens, HOW is it happening, and WHY is it happening to streetlights in particular.
The reader is given a fairly decent technical explanation of streetlights, with an emphasis on understanding where in a streetlight's electrical system a source of interference might be applied such that the light goes out (or on) when it should not.

Of course, the best part of the book--the fun part--are the personal experiences of SLIders. How can one resist the description of the family driving around a parking lot gleefully shouting "we got one!" every time a light goes out?

Whether you're a skeptic or a SLIder or a simple believer in "woo-woo experiences" large and small: read this for fun and with an open mind, because nobody can prove or disprove causality at this point.
All in all, for a book that explores a subject in the paranormal, this is pretty good.
