It was the apex of the conflict in Vietnam. Hundreds of American soldiers were being killed every week in that war ravaged country. Rocky Olson, a newly trained and indoctrinated American infantryman, was sent as a combat replacement into that maelstrom of politics, suffering, and death. He was given an "experienced" M-16, and was provided with endless opportunities to force "Sir Charles" to give his last full measure of devotion to the communist cause.

This true, amazing, first-hand account of that brutal war has touched thousands.

Book includes 29 original color photographs taken by the author during his tour of combat. Area of operation maps are also included.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Afghan Veteran's thoughts on Sgt. Rock 29. Mai 2011

I was wandering through Costco about 3 weeks ago when I came across a kiosk with this book and it's author. As I spoke with Mr. Olson he told me that it was a book written of his experiences in Vietnam. I served in Afghanistan and have an avid interest in others war experiences. This book reminded me of E.B. Sledge's experiences in WWII on Peleliu and Okinawa his book (With the Old Breed). I would go so far as to say that Mr. Olson's book is the Vietnam version of E.B. Sledge's book. I just completed reading Sgt. Rock Last Warrior Standing and I had the same sense that it is the very best depiction of war - because it is real. War is tragic, destructive, and necessary only when all other options have been exhausted. My understanding is that With the Old Breed is required reading for Marine Corps Officer Cadets, and I would suggest that Mr. Olson's book be required reading as well. It does not romanticize war as Hollywood loves to do - it is raw and descriptive in a way that it broadens the understanding of the war experience for those who have not experienced it. Thank you for writing this book Mr. Olson, and thank you for your sacrifices and service.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Riveting - couldn't stop reading! 21. Januar 2011

Rocky Olson is a great story teller and brings to life the experiences of a soldier drafted to serve in the VietNam war. If you ever wanted to know what it is really like being a soldier fighting a war, this is a must read book. Rocky Olson has written a book that is not only informative, but is also suspensful from beginning to end. I could not put the book down until I had turned the last page. Although I was aware that the author had survived, I felt the terror and apprehension of each mission. As someone who never wore the uniform or had to fight a war, I appreciated the author giving me that vicarious experience. The writing is supurb and this book will take you on an emotional ride.

This book is not written with any political agenda. It is the experiences of a soldier in real combat. For any story about VietNam that is refreshing. As a citizen I would like to suggest that this book should be required reading by anyone who has the burden of ordering troops into combat.

SGT Rock is one of the best books I have read in the past 2 yeas and I highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Boots on the ground 21. Januar 2011
Von Hal B - Veröffentlicht auf

In Bernard B Fall's classic work "Street Without Joy" he tells the story of the French Army's loss, resulting in the creation of North Vietnam. General Giap lead the victory for the Vietnamese over the French. This book was written from a tactical standpoint. General Giap again used the very same tactics in his efforts to destroy the South Vietnam government and unite Vietnam.

Now comes a book by Rocky Olson, that accurately tells what an american soldier went through, when faced with an enemy using General Giap's tactics. An enemy that would not fight a "set piece" battle. This book is not about tactics, it is about soldiers with their boots on the ground.

I loved the book and came away with a better understanding of what our young troops went through. They fought because their country asked them to.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Thrilling, insiteful, and thought provoking 23. Januar 2011

An amazing account of one soldier's experience in Vietnam. I generally avoid reading nonfiction and biographical books, but this ones reads like any thriller from the best seller lists. It's a hard one to put down. In addition, it gave me insights into what Vietnam was really like, the fearing for your life, the sadness of losing a friend, the adrenaline of battle, the miraculous, as well as the typical army "hurry up and wait." Thanks to the author for his service and for sharing his experience with us!

Just finished this one tonight. Upon closing the book, I had mixed emotions. Some 40+ years after Rocky's tour ended, plenty of time has elapsed for those involved, and those who weren't to have their thoughts about Vietnam evolve.

Rocky relays to us his time in Vietnam in a loose diary format. Each of the chapters is effectively a chapter in his personal war. Sparsely littered within the chapters, Rocky lets us inside his head somewhat and lays out his thoughts for us. Nothing too deep just a sentence here and there that let us know how he processes what he's doing and what he's seeing. Rocky is able to justify his actions, and those of his men, within the mission parameters of a grunt in Vietnam. He's no fan of killing, nor is he a fan of seeing his brothers-in-arms being killed yet, he believes in his country and, by default, the decision to draft him and send him to Vietnam.

He reflects on the anti-war movement back home and how they were treating the returning soldiers. For me, the anti-war movement got it all wrong. Returning soldiers should not be the focal point of an anti-war movement. They do not put themselves in harm's way but, by their own volition or otherwise, follow the calling of their country. Being dumped into a hostile situation a million miles from home is going to turn young men into survivalists in an instant. For me, anti-war activists should focus solely on the senders, not the sent.

Rocky's book is a narrative of war. One of the better memoirs I've read; this one is well written and will stand out in a readers mind. Read it, absorb it, but don't judge the author to harshly for what he did whilst on his tour of duty. He did what he needed to do for his brothers, his country and himself. Whatever your views on war, keep in mind, the soldiers don't start them, their goal is to finish them.

Welcome home Rocky, stay healthy.
