Ruby is a seven-year-old with a supernatural gift, oppressed in a spaceship ruled by genetic engineers who put her parents down for being incurable daydreamers. She escapes their fate with the help of a 100-year-old Iroquois woman and allies from a higher nature. Her ability to use her talents is tested on the planet Saardu. Readers of all ages and cultures have enjoyed rooting for Ruby during this original, inventive, refreshing heroine's quest.

Readers will enjoy a fantastic voyage through spacetime following Ruby and her allies to higher natures beyond Earth. The first half of the book finds Ruby stifled and orphaned by a community that is too technical and prohibits artistry as a dangerous waste of time and risk of neuroses. The second half is a transformative adventure on the planet Saardu and in the higher realm of Zenya, and one that readers will never forget.

You are about to own the Kindle 2014-07-31 Edition, featuring the conceptual artwork created by Ludovic Leleu, a painter in France, who met the author via Facebook when the original screenplay of this story was nominated for best script awards in multiple contests. Ludo asked Carma if he could read her script and she sent a PDF copy to him. After reading it, he asked permission to create artwork based on it, and she was delighted to see what he would do. That was the beginning of a beautiful friendship and unforgettable collaborative journey. Carma loved his work so much, she decided to flesh out a novel based on her award-winning screenplay, featuring Ludo's Saardu artwork. The 2014-07-31 Kindle Edition is the digital replica of the one and only Saardu paperback.

The 2009 paperback novel, Saardu: The Adventure Begins, is a limited edition and the only book by the author that was authorized for print. To promote e-reading and reduce paper use and printing waste, the author has declared that all of her books will be ebooks from 2010 forward. The paperback was created by the author as a collectible item for Saardu fans, and will never be reprinted. Only 5,000 copies were ordered. When Borders went out of business in 2010 and began returning books to warehouses, it became impossible to break even on the project, and the author gave most of the 5,000 copies to youth groups, schools and libraries. Charities such as Good Will and Salvation Army have been given copies to sell at Amazon. The author has a small reserve of new, pristine copies signed by herself and the illustrator in 2010, during Ludo's visit to Los Angeles. Personalized and autographed copies are available for a limited time, while the supply lasts, certified by the author.

The author's maiden name is Carma Yvonne Dillon. In 2012, she adopted the pen name Chan to honor her Chinese stepdad, her greatest hero. The paperback was published under the author's maiden name. The sequels and digital replica of the paperback are published under Carma Chan, affectionately known as The Saardu Lady. Mehr über den Autor

Carma Chan is a freelance writer, journalist, story/script consultant and co-producer for the Cerebus Film (updates at She also created the press kit for 'The Rise and Fall of Their American Dream' ( She is currently working on Volumes 17 and 18 of her HIGHER NATURES Digital Book Series.

She works full-time as a member of the Oracle North America Sales organization. The opinions expressed here and elsewhere online are her own and do not reflect corporate policy.

Carma is the creator of a science fiction series of ebooks based on her award-winning screenplay, Saardu: The Adventure Begins (2009; this is now Volume 11 of the Higher Natures digital book series). She also writes nonfiction, poetry, and short stories. She prefers ebooks over print, and self publishing over conglomerate publishing houses, so that more minds all over the world may be touched regardless of profitability. The words of Kurt Vonnegut inspired her: "Infect them with humanity." However, the prime directive comes from her mentor, Richard Walter: "The worst thing to be in Hollywood is boring."

Her formal education includes two UCLA screenwriting courses and some general studies at community colleges. She passed a GED at Salt Lake City High School and opted out early to pursue other interests.

Carma Chan is a pen name legally used to honor the legacy of her beloved Chinese stepdad, John Wang Leong Chan (1933-2001, owner/masterchef of Jon-Jon's Restaurant in St. George Utah). Born in Los Angeles, Carma Yvonne Dillon (1958). Most of her non-fiction is published under C.Y. Dillon. She has also used a family surname, Gagné, in the past to carry on the legacy of her mother's father, who had only two daughters: Joseph Albert Gagné, who died in 1951 in a hunting accident in Utah.

The following is a verbatim letter of recommendation from a highly qualified screenwriting professor who has had a profound impact on her abilities as a storyteller and script consultant.

To Whom It May Concern:

I've known Carma Dillon [Chan] for five years, first as my student in an off-campus screenwriting seminar, and then in my UCLA Summer Session course in advanced screenwriting. She started working on her remarkable SAARDU quite some years ago, and surely would have finished it sooner if she had not put the care and nurturing of a special-needs child ahead of her ambitions as a writer.

Carma demonstrates politeness and humility, and an exceptional dedication and passion for mastering her art and craft. I found her first draft of SAARDU to be original, fresh, and highly marketable. I gave her notes on the script; she accepted constructive analysis with an open heart and mind.

Working with Carma is a joy. She strives always to do her best, yet with a lightheartedness that is contagious. She is gracious and patient and honorable in every way. She has a deep love for storytelling. With her vivid imagination and love for life, she is capable of writing anything she puts her mind and heart to. She has written several screenplays, all of them worthy. SAARDU is, however, in my view the most special among her stories.

SAARDU represents one piece of a vast new myth. It involved challenging choices regarding structure and other screenwriting issues. Through perseverance and diligence she solved all of them. This script is no small achievement. It is worthy of consideration at the highest levels of the industry.

It has been an honor and enchantment to have come to know Carma and to have been able to support her in the creation of SAARDU.

SAARDU is a story of relationships and identity. These are very same themes that lie at the heart of worthwhile dramatic narratives going all the way back to the ancient Greek masters.

SAARDU is another world, in another time, but it is also a reflection of us, here and now. Ruby, the unlikely hero, is endearing and I found myself cheering for her at the turn of every page. Carma has created several strong characters to challenge and guide Ruby.

I promise you'll agree that Carma is a writer worth reading.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A must for every child's holiday gift basket! 18. November 2009
Von Trystan Skeigh - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
A truly futuristic sci-fi/fantasy tale, Saardu was written by an adult geek, for young geeks. This is not an intellectually easy read. Children will be exposed to advanced theories about space, time, and energy, blended with elements of magical fantasy. The unimaginative will not be able to grasp this work. It's for dreamers. Ruby is a little girl on an adventure that is both healing, challenging and inspirational. I'm not going to give it away, but I will say, to all of those who grew up with childrens' book series, like Narnia, or Nancy Drew, or Trixie Beldon, or the Three Investigators, or Harry Potter, this is another spell-binding journey in the making. This is book one. Kudos to the author, and may she bring many more tales in the saga of Ruby and Saadu into fruition!

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Wonderful New Myth 19. November 2009
Von Lesly Braun - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
The hallmark of a wonderful myth is that it has the power to transform. Carma Dillon's story of Saardu is accessible to both the imagination of children and adults. Children will identify with Ruby's quest to make sense of her world, and adults will be able to ponder interesting questions regarding the nature of a multi-dimensional reality. It will, indeed, transform the way all its readers see their world. The ability to make this sort of speculative story entertaining and enjoyable is a real tribute to Ms. Dillon's unique talent.

The story was hard to read. The change from first person to third person was inconsistent. I think this story has potential but needs to be 're-written.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A must read 18. November 2009
Von Cathy F. - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
A beautifully written story that appeals to anyone with intelligence and imagination. Adults and children alike will relate to Ruby and her adventures will inspire the daydreamer in all of us.

I have ordered copies for myself and my grandkids ages 6 - 12.

My sympathies to anyone who is too stuck in mundane reality to enjoy this story.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Nicely done, Carma 19. November 2009
Von Fritz - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
I had the privilege of reading this bit of work in its earlier stages. And even then I was impressed by its charm and wit. Impossible not to fall in love with young Ruby. Impossible not to root for her, first page to last. And best of all, the images have stuck. Which seems to me the mark of fine writing, living characters revisiting us from time to time. Brava, dear lady, for so gently passionate a read, and for the magic carpet journey it lifts us to, young and old alike.
