To the outside world, they look like American Royalty, giving to charities, feeding the homeless, rebuilding the city. But behind closed doors is a constant battle for dominance between two Bosses, cultures, and hearts.

Fury burned in his eyes as he breathed roughly through his nose. “My mother told me never to hit a woman, but you are pushing my limits.”

“Funny, my father told me the same thing. Would you like me to apologize?” I pushed my thumbs to his eyes, forcing him to let go of my throat.

We fought and struggled on the ground like savage animals before he picked me up and threw me into the nearest wall.

Ruthless People is a romantic crime fiction set in modern day Chicago, following the life and marriage of Melody Nicci Giovanni and Liam Callahan—rivals by blood and leaders through fear. Their marriage was arranged by their fathers in hopes to end years of bloodshed between the Irish and the Italians.

Liam, next in line to lead the Irish, believes he’s getting a simple-minded wife, one he can control, one who bends to his every need . . . the complete opposite of Melody. Bred to be a Boss, a world-class marksman, master of disguise, with no mercy and no fear. Twenty-four years later, she has achieved more than any man could even dream of, killing anyone who steps in her way. She knows exactly what type of man Liam is, and she would rather die than give up the power she has spent her whole life building. But with no other family left, she must not only learn to work with Liam, but the whole Callahan clan.

The Mafia of the past is evolving, and with rival bosses gunning for them, Melody and Liam will have to figure out how to work as one to take down those who stand in their way, all while keeping up appearances.

Power, Family, and Respect are everything.

5.0 von 5 Sternen 5 stars! Ruthless People, book 1 (3). A whirlwind & blood-filled merger of 2 mafia houses; a prodigal son & mafia heiress! 17. Juli 2014
Von Avid Reader - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
"She f**** ng shot me. I had been so shocked and h**ny that my mind couldn't even comprehend what had happened."

Books in series should be read in order:
Book 1: Ruthless People
Book 2: The Untouchables
Book 3: American Savages

The Ruthless People trilogy follows two mafia families, The Callahan's (Irish) and The Giovanni's (Italian) in their merge, through marriage, with the intent of maintaining power, wealth and world domination through mainly drug trafficking and corruption by a.n.y. m.e.a.n.s. n.e.c.e.s.s.a.r.y.!

Ruthless People (book 1) opens up to prodigal son Liam Alec Callahan, in bed with his mistress reflecting over the marriage contract that had been signed twelve years prior between two of the most powerful mafia houses in the world - his family and The Giovanni's.

Liam has worked tirelessly alongside his father and the time has finally come for his father to pass the reigns and title of Ceann na Conairte to him. Heiress Melody Nicci Giovanni is the final piece in the puzzle. Through their marriage he will not only take over his father's, but also her father's mafia empire AND gain a meek wife to represent them to the world...

Nothing, I repeat nothing could have prepared Liam for Melody! For the past six years, in complete secrecy and hidden from the world, Melody aka The Boss has been running her family empire and she is not happy about her upcoming marriage. Needless to say their first meeting did not go well, mainly for Liam. LOL!

Story follows Liam and Melody, America's new favorite couple, in the power struggle that ensues while Melody is integrated into her new family. What works in their favor is their intense and undeniable sexual attraction. They soon discover that they are extremely compatible in bed. Based on that they can come to an understanding on how to run their empire.

Ruthless People goes onto follow them as they are challenged for world domination by The Valero's (Russians) as well as the new Chicago Police Commissioner. Matters soon get complicated by set-backs and more importantly when feelings enter the picture as their enemies close in. Strap on your seatbelt for a ride like no other filled with suspense, intrigue, murder, corruption, violence, manipulation and... mind-blowing sex!

"She looks like a sweet little lamb from afar, but when you get close, you find out she skinned and ate the d*mn thing just to use it as a coat. She's a beast."

MELODY NICCI GIOVANNI aka The Boss, Bloody Melody: 24 years/Heiress/Mob queen/Black hair/Brown eyes.
Melody Nicci Giovanni aka The Boss aka Bloody Melody might go down in my book history! She had the perfect blend of strong, bad-ass heroine, vulnerable, broken girl and men-at-your-feet temptress with a temper! Nine words to describe Melody: V.o.l.a.t.i.l.e., motivated, competitive, fierce, smart, calculated, emotional, hot-headed and ruthless.
"She is. . . she is Bl*ody Melody and perfect. God created her and then shattered the mold afterward, for the world could not handle two of her."

LIAM ALEC CALLAHAN aka Ceann na Conairte: 27 years/2nd son/heir/Mobster/Brown hair/Green eyes.
I don't know who I love more Liam Alec Callahan aka Ceann na Conairte or his Melody. Much of my early enjoyment was derived from Liam's fall into whopped, but he quickly landed on his feet and found a balance between whopped, in charge and diplomacy. As the layers are peeled, add to that the story about his childhood, and it'll be hard not to love this ruthless killer. Nine words to describe Liam: Focused, c*cky, calculated, reflective, jaded, hot-headed, vulnerable, diplomatic and ruthless.
"I loved being dominated in such a beastly sexual way. How his hands, lips and tongue all grabbed on to me."

It takes skill to write a story where the bad guys become the heroes & the good guys are made into villains! Just be warned, though I saw HUGE personal growth on both MCs and side characters, these people are savages with NO remorse or compassion and their singular focus is selfish and superficial - within the confines of the family!

I devoured this story; every page, every sentence, every word! The best way to describe the ending is the most loose-ends were tied up and we were given a promising teaser to the next chapter of their lives! I cannot wait for book 2, The Untouchables.

Outstanding character development! Fascinating heroine. To-die-for hero! Brilliant plot! Mesmerizing storytelling! Hot-as-f*** sex! This story reeks of 6-stars! My hat off to J.J. McAvoy for an a.m.a.z.i.n.g. debut!

"That ticks me off!" She snapped. "Since when could you bribe me with treats like a f**** ng child."
I groaned, pinching the bridge of my nose. "So no smoothie then?"
"Mango, banana, orange and extra kiwi," she replied before hanging up."

5.0 von 5 Sternen DANGEROUSLY sexy and addicting! 10. Juli 2014
Von djdavis - Veröffentlicht auf
Even the most innocent of people will thirst for blood and revenge after reading this story.

Rule One: You kill for family. You die for family. Because you can't trust anyone else.
Rule Two: Take no prisoners and have no regrets about it.
Rule Three: Just because you sell drugs for a living isn't an excuse not to dress well.
Rule Four: No bloody divorce.

...'Even in killing men, observe the rules of propriety.' - Confucius

This is a bitter, bloody, badass story that merges two rivaling mafia powerhouses, the Italians–Giovanni and the Irish, Callahans. For decades they have ruled over parts of the country and even the world. But as the fathers step aside a new reign steps up to the plate. The new reigning power–Melody Giovanni and Liam Callahan will quickly be known as the ruthless leaders of their time.

When Melody and Liam are married and merge their companies and family, a fight for who will be 'Boss' quickly begins. Between the brutal fights and the violent lovemaking most of their men try to stay out of their way, but not everyone is lucky.

She's the most merciless, blood thirsty, and callous woman anyone has ever met. At the age of 17-years she'd already taken her seat as the head of her Italian family, proving herself to her men. Only a few years later, and she was known in tight circles for her ruthlessness. Her mind and her style is as sharp as a nail, and while she may look like an angle from afar....She is deadly up-close. With looks that could kill and a temper that can freighten even the meanest of gangsters, most don't know whether to attempt to kill her or kiss her.

She doesn't need anyone or anything but the loyalty of her men and the revenge she seeks for her mother. She will not be broken, and she will not bow down, not even to Liam.

Recently came into power after years of learning some of his most cruel and cold-hearted tactics from his father. His handsome physique and sexy accent fool most people. But beneath his cocky and arrogant personality lies a deadly and lethal man whose thirst for blood and power has turned into sport. He's hungry to take over the family business and is willing and ready to take down anyone who dares to step in his way. His only obstacle is the beautiful and deadly woman that he married. He often struggles to find a balance between wanting to put a bullet in her and needing to make love to her. Together Melody and Liam navigate leading their people–the Italian and the Irish mafia– into a new era. Their goal, to take over Chicago; to take over the East and the West coasts, and eventually the country. The road they travel is not easy. They fight for total power and control, for the battle for respect and loyalty, and the war of loving one another as their tempers boil to new heights while they learn how to live and work together. It's an exciting ride to watch...
As they fight with one another. As they rule together. As they fall in love.

One brutal leader is hard to fight, but two vicious leaders is perilous. The combination of Melody and Liam together is beautiful and deadly.

The Best Thing:
YAY!!!! Hands down...this is the best book I've read this year! Well done McAvoy.

The Story: This was a well thought out and well written story, from beginning to end. It's fast pace, full of action, sexy, love, lust, revenge, seriously questionable violence, and lies. I felt like someone had pumped me with too much adrenaline while I read this book.

The Characters: The characters are very complicated and dynamic. I love that there are layers upon layers beneath each character so that you don't get bored as you continue reading the story. They evolve along with the storyline and before you know if you begin to like/love those that you hated initially. Melody wins the award for best female character in a book for 2014! She's as hard as nails, a true bargirl.

She doesn't take any crap from anyone including Liam.

The writing style: I loved how McAvoy included Italian and Irish dialogue in the book, it made it so much more significant. I wasn't sure I would like that we got more than two point of views (Neal, Declan, Olivia, Coraline, Evelyn, and even Adrianna). I've read books before that attempted this but failed. In this instance McAvoy knows exactly when to cut off a certain character. I never thought...'awww I really don't wanna know what you are thinking or how you are reacting', because she always kept supporting details just that, supporting.

The Worst Thing:
I wish we could have learned more about Melody's past with her mom, but then I understand this will probably be the focus of book two.

The only thing that really pushed my buttons a little would be the 'chump of a man' that Liam could be at times. I wanted to see him become just as ruthless as Melody. I hated that she initially didn't feel or want to feel for him or anyone, and because of that she held all the power for their relationship. I wanted him to grow a pair when it came to her.

Overall: I absolutely loved this book!!! I've already told most of my friends and family that this is a MUST READ for the year.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A Totally Different Book 25. September 2014
Von bookittyblog - Veröffentlicht auf
So, I’ve been trying to write a review for Ruthless People for the longest time. The only thing that comes to mind right now is Holy Shift. I bought this one on a whim when I saw a post on Facebook of a reviewer raving about it. She was saying how different and how addicting the book was. I wish I remembered who it was because she was right!!! This book was not what I was expecting at all.

The main character Mel is kind of scary. No never mind that; she was terrifying! I’m not used to being intimidated by female main characters. I was little taken aback. This girl did not play. Which it’s understandable since she is a mafia boss and needs to prove herself to her crew just because she’s a female. I got to see a softer side of her in some parts of the book, but I wasn’t fooled. Her nature was to be cruel and ruthless. I can’t say if I liked her or not. I was surprised by the things she did, and she was definitely not a relatable character, but I did appreciate her attitude and how she knew she was the best at what she did.

Liam was a little bit predictable, and a little be softer than Mel. He still did terrible things, but he balanced the book. I definitely loved the way Mel and Liam clashed and the things they did to each other were borderline sadistic but you could feel the sexual tension sizzling between them. It didn’t hurt that they both had the same goal, which was to rule the world. The secondary characters were more likable they weren't as mean-spirited as our two main characters, and they had a heart. Something happened with one of Liam’s brother that actually pissed me off so much I had to put the book down for a few minutes to remind myself that this was just a book. It was kind of hard to remember that the people in the book were fictional because everything felt so real that’s one of the things I loved the most about Ruthless People.

I don’t know how most people will feel about this book. I was pretty much reading a book told by the villains' POV. I thought it was refreshing, and it made me feel all kinds of weird, but I loved it.

3.0 von 5 Sternen Disappointing, but will continue the series. 1. Dezember 2014

I can't even with this book. I blame it on Nicholas Denmon's For Nothing, which is a mafia thriller with very high standards.

The short of it is (as much as it pains me to admit it): outside of the plot, Ruthless People is pretty terrible.

The grammatical failure is what strikes me the most. There are easily more than three typos--spelling, punctuation, or otherwise--on every page. I cannot imagine it having been edited or proofread. I'm not a grammar-nazi, but, it happens so often in this book that it is exceptionally distracting.

Our main characters, Melody and Liam, are underdeveloped. I can easily imagine each side character, but I cannot tell Melody and Liam apart. They carry themselves the same and they speak the same and they think the same. This is an issue with first person storytelling that switches perspectives constantly; the characters must be dimensional and striking, but such is not the case with this book. I had to keep going back to the beginning of the chapter to figure out who's head I was supposed to be in. In addition, the dialogue from all sides is unbelievable.

The fool spit up all over himself as he gasped out for air. "They're in hiding."
"No f-----g duh!"

No f------g duh? Really? What self-respecting crime boss would ever speak that way? What educated adult would ever speak that way?

The monologue isn't far behind. Because our characters are so one-dimensional to me, their thoughts are unreliable. They never reflect on their lives in such violent, heavy crime--even when alone--yet seem completely sane. They are not psychotic; they are ruthless. But still human, and I just don't believe them.

All of that being said, I did finish the book in less than a day. I had plenty of opportunities to DNF it--I don't stick with books that I'm not enjoying; there are too many books and too little time--but I didn't. The first one-hundred pages, I admit, were painful; I thought that Melody and Liam's childish games with one another were overdone in the most immature way, and if it had gone one much longer, I would have definitely given up on it.

But the plot.

The plot is seamless. Though there are things I feel that could have been done better, such as focus on the drugs since that is their business (we rarely ever hear anything about what the Irish/Italians actually do to make their money), I loved the organized crime, I love the ruthlessness, the power, the loyalty. The plot was a shoot-em-up, cut-their-balls-off-and-feed-it-to-them-for-breakfast thrill ride. I love mob fiction, and the fact that we have an epic--though psychologically unhealthy--love story between two crime bosses (one of them a woman who runs the entire freaking Italian mob) is not something I can in good conscience ever pass up. The ending was beautiful--not something I saw coming--and I do not regret reading it and I will continue with the second book (albeit hoping it gets much, much better), but I can't help but feel disappointed and robbed as a reader with as much hype this book has. It was a brilliant idea, but the execution--the editing, the development, the dialogue, the initial set-up--really was pretty awful in comparison to authentic, realistic, well-written mob fiction.

4.5 out of 5

Holy hell, what did I just read? Ruthless People was crazy! Never have I read a book where the characters were so inherently evil, yet simultaneously endearing and captivating. This book is NOT for the faint of heart. If you do not enjoy stories of murder, torture and mayhem, this probably isn’t for you. It is vicious and brutal. However, if you are drawn towards a fast-paced, gritty, violent, ruthless, over the top modern day mobster/love story, then please try Ruthless People because it is fantastic.

I’m not sure there is a more appropriate title here. The story of Liam and Mel, children of the respective Irish and Italian mob bosses were contracted to wed and carry on the family business. And do they. These are two of the most unique and brilliant characters I have come across in quite some time. Loyal in their commitment to family, ruthless in its execution (yes a very apropos word), their relationship was what drew me in from the start. Clearly they could not have a normal courtship as it were, but the development of their friendship and ultimately love was terrifyingly entertaining. The banter – it was like “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” meets The Sopranos, with guns. Mel, wow. She frightened me with her nobody Fs with me/heartless attitude. Though the depth to which she lacked any humanity or a conscience with regard to her job still continued to surprise me to the end. At the same time, we did see some vulnerability that, while expected, added a much needed angle to the story. Liam was just as brutal. I know it’s a huge double standard, but the violence was less shocking and more “tolerable” for lack of a better word because he is a man. I loved his connection to/passion for his wife and the lengths he went to to prove his love. He was crazy but I guess it comes with the territory. As much as I wanted to hate them for what they did, I couldn’t entirely. That lifestyle is all they know. Those two had a crazy connection and the violence just pushed them further. Literally jaw dropping at times. I just wish the back and forth banter had lasted a litter longer.

Does it make me a bad person for devouring this? I admit, I honestly feel a little guilty. There is so much more going on in this story but I don’t want to give anything away because the story was brutally awesome. The family dynamics were brilliantly woven into the story, with siblings and spouses and alternating POVs. While there wasn’t a cliffhanger per se, there are revelations at the end that clearly carry us in to the next book in the series, and I can tell you I am totally committed to reading it. I just need a little time to regain my composure after finishing this one, maybe read something really sweet and happy next. Wow. Vicious.
