First published in 1971, Rules for Radicals is Saul Alinsky's impassioned counsel to young radicals on how to effect constructive social change and know “the difference between being a realistic radical and being a rhetorical one.” Written in the midst of radical political developments whose direction Alinsky was one of the first to question, this volume exhibits his style at its best. Like Thomas Paine before him, Alinsky was able to combine, both in his person and his writing, the intensity of political engagement with an absolute insistence on rational political discourse and adherence to the American democratic tradition.

Über den Autor
Saul Alinsky was born in Chicago in 1909 and educated first in the streets of that city and then in its university. Graduate work at the University of Chicago in criminology introduced him to the Capone gang, and later to Joliet State Prison, where he studied prison life.
He founded what is known today as the Alinsky ideology and Alinsky concepts of mass organization for power. His work in organizing the poor to fight for their rights as citizens has been internationally recognized. In the late 1930s he organized the Back of the Yards area in Chicago (the neighborhood made famous in Upton Sinclair's The Jungle). Subsequently, through the Industrial Areas Foundation which he began in 1940, Mr. Alinsky and his staff helped to organize communities not only in Chicago but throughout the country. He later turned his attentions to the middle class, creating a training institute for organizers. He died in 1972.

I read this book for a class in Active Citizenship in college. It was the only book in college that I would read before I went to bed for enjoyment. If you want to learn how to change your university or institution, this book is the place to start. I use so much of the book in what I now do!

Mr. Alinsky captures the outrage organizers have with the status quo. 'Why organize?' is the central question that permeates throughout this book, and Mr. Alinsky answers this question with a scathing attack on the powers that be, who are beholden to maintaining the status quo. Mr. Alinsky allows the reader to not just dream of a better America but doles out powerful, practical methods to either; A. work within the current system to effect positive change, or B. bring the system to its knees in the quest toward positive change. An absolute must read for anyone wishing to take on the status quo of poverty, injustice, hatred, and discrimination.

Its hard to find a subject that organizers of social change face that isn't in this brief book. Alinksy is not an academic writer, instead his writing comes out of years of experience in direct action organizing and training of organizers. While some of his suggestions are a bit off the wall, belying his sarcastic tone, his general musings make the book worth re-reading each year for career organizers and required reading once for anybody involved in community change.

Amazing, thought-provoking book
Alinsky accomplished much for many downtrodden people. This book explains his methods.

A throwback from long ago, but somewhat curious
I'd say it's a throwback from 60s (if not 40s.) The book is full of terminology and general attitude, that I found rather annoying. Is it leftist? Hmmm .... Lesen Sie weiter...
