I am a big fan of the Rough Guides and always consult them before traveling to a destination.
So I happily ordered the Paris guide for an upcoming trip.
Unfortunately, I've been a bit disappointed by this copy.
My main complaints are somewhat technical. The "Basics" section is done with a font and color combination that is exceptionally hard to read. The letters are so light that even in good light it's a strain to see at all, must less read. The callout boxes in this section, in light blue, are even worse. Style is important, but functionality cannot be sacrificed for interesting colors and fonts.
My second complaint is that the index is also lacking. Several key areas that I've tried to find in the index are just completely missing, such as The Catacombs. Information is in the book, why not give an index entry?
Overall I am highly satisfied with the Rough Guide series, but this particular guide just fell short of the high standard I expect from them.

This is my first experience with a "Rough Guide". I have taken many trips (3 to Paris), using the usual suspects' travel guides. Compared to others, Rough Guide seems to have A LOT more items and areas listed. Many guides narrow cities down to "must sees" and give decided opinions on what is worth your time and what is not. This is very useful for first and second timers to keep them from being overwhelmed with possibilities and extraneous info. This Guide, however, mentions many many things I've never even heard of in Paris. It doesn't give very many pointed opinions - so you can decide for yourself whether or not you might like to see something. This Guide also goes a bit farther out from the tourist center of the city. Most guides sort of stick to the first 8 arrondisements and Montmartre. I will definitely use this guide to plan my upcoming, fourth trip to Paris. To get off of the beaten tourist track a bit. I don't think this is necessarily a guide to carry with you around the city (there is A LOT of information in it) - but a great one to write yourself notes as to what you want to see and do - and carry those.
